Lodovico 2016 — Tenuta di Biserno

This Lodovico 2016 from Tenuta di Biserno, offered here in magnum OWC, is one of the rarest and most ambitious cuvées of the Tuscan coast. From a special selection within the Bellaria vineyard, it expresses the depth of a great Bolgheri-Bibbona wine with a strong Cabernet Franc identity: woodland berries, cassis, blackberry, black cherry, violet, Mediterranean spices, graphite, tobacco, liquorice and a long elegant finish.

Lodovico bears the first name of Lodovico Antinori, a major figure in the renaissance of great wines from the Tuscan coast. After Ornellaia, he co-founded Tenuta di Biserno in the early 2000s, in a sector of Bibbona renowned for deep, mineral soils well suited to Bordeaux grape varieties. The 2016 is a vintage of great precision: concentrated, harmonious and complex, with deep substance, silky tannins and remarkable ageing potential.

The spirit of the wine

A great Super Tuscan of depth, perfume and mastery, more refined than demonstrative. The 2016 combines concentration, freshness and precision: ripe black fruit, floral notes, Mediterranean spices, velvety texture, fine tannins and a very long finish. The magnum format further enhances the slow evolution and nobility of this limited-production cuvée.

Terroir: Bellaria, Bibbona and the mineral soils of Tenuta di Biserno

Lodovico comes from a special selection of grapes within the Bellaria vineyard, on the Tenuta di Biserno estate near Bibbona. This area benefits from the maritime influence of the Tyrrhenian coast, which moderates ripeness, preserves acidity and encourages balanced phenolic maturity. Cool night winds contribute to the wine’s tension and aromatic precision.

Biserno’s soils are known for their mineral richness, depth and rocky nature, with heavier subsoils particularly suited to Bordeaux varieties, especially Cabernet Franc. In the 2016, this terroir translates into a wine that is dense yet harmonious, combining black fruits, woodland berries, cassis, spices, graphite, fine earth, freshness and an elegant tannic structure.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Franc, Bibbona, Bellaria, maritime influence, mineral and rocky soils, cassis, woodland berries, blackberry, Mediterranean spices, graphite and tannic freshness.

Lodovico signature: very limited production, parcel selection, a great Bordeaux-style wine from Tuscany, depth, perfume, silky tannins and very long ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby with purple and garnet reflections, dense, bright and still very sustained. In magnum, the colour should evolve slowly, preserving its dark brilliance, depth and visual freshness for a long time.

Nose: elegant, deep and gradually complex, with woodland berries, cassis, blackberry, black cherry, ripe red fruits, violet, Mediterranean spices, liquorice, blond tobacco and fine earth. With aeration, nuances of graphite, discreet cedar, cocoa, sweet pepper, aromatic herbs and dark flowers may appear.

Palate: harmonious, broad and very balanced, with deep substance but no heaviness. The tannins are silky, enveloping and highly refined, supporting ripe black fruit, precise freshness and long spicy persistence. The finish is elegant, dense, mineral and remarkably long, carried by cassis, woodland berries, liquorice, spice and graphite.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, woodland berries, ripe red fruits, dark berries.

Flowers and spices: violet, dark flowers, Mediterranean spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, aromatic herbs.

Evolution and terroir: graphite, blond tobacco, discreet cedar, cocoa, fine earth, minerality, silky tannins.

Overall impression: deep, elegant and harmonious great Tuscan wine, with controlled concentration, silky texture and a very long finish.

Expression of the 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage in Tuscany produced great wines of balance, freshness and controlled ripeness. For Lodovico, this year stands out for a particularly successful combination of concentration, depth, aromatic complexity and precision. Tastings highlight an elegant and harmonious wine, able to open in the glass with fruity, floral and spicy notes, supported by supple tannins and a very long finish.

Today, this Lodovico 2016 in magnum remains young and has very strong ageing potential. It can already impress through its depth and balance after careful aeration, but its true interest lies in slow evolution: fine leather, tobacco, cedar, graphite, cocoa, forest floor, melted spices and balsamic complexity should gradually join the purity of the black fruit.

In summary: a rare, deep and highly refined Lodovico 2016, from a selection of the Bellaria vineyard, enhanced by the magnum format in original wooden case and by the precision of a great Tuscan vintage.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, black cherry, woodland berries, violet, Mediterranean spices, liquorice, blond tobacco, graphite, fine earth, discreet cedar and a very long mineral finish.
