Château Climens 2007 — Barsac Premier Cru Classé
This Château Climens 2007 belongs to the great modern successes of Barsac. Often referred to as the “Lord of Barsac”, Climens delivers in this vintage a masterful expression of botrytised Sémillon: aromatic purity, honeyed depth, citrus brightness, limestone freshness and remarkable persistence.
The 2007 vintage was particularly favourable for the great sweet wines of Bordeaux. At Climens, noble rot developed with exceptional precision, giving a wine that is rich, intense and beautifully balanced. The sweetness is deep yet never heavy, carried by vivid acidity, chalky minerality and a finish of rare energy.
Terroir: Barsac limestone and noble rot
Château Climens is located in Barsac, on limestone soils that give the wines their singular freshness, great precision and distinctive saline sensation. Unlike many blended Bordeaux sweet wines, Climens is made exclusively from Sémillon, a grape variety that reaches its full nobility here in great botrytis vintages.
The 2007 harvest was carried out in four successive selective pickings, from 12 September to 26 October, in order to select only grapes affected by noble rot at the ideal level of concentration. With 150.6 g/L of residual sugar, the wine offers remarkable richness, perfectly balanced by the natural tension of the Barsac terroir.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep gold with early amber reflections, brilliant and luminous, with fine viscosity in the glass and still very controlled evolution.
Nose: complex and noble, with acacia honey, candied apricot, roasted peach, quince, bitter orange, candied lemon, dried pineapple, saffron, candied ginger, beeswax, toasted almond and a touch of warm stone. With aeration, nuances of tea, marmalade, fine spices and dried flowers may appear.
Palate: ample, intense and perfectly balanced, with deep sweetness, silky texture and remarkable freshness. The wine combines honeyed richness, citrus brightness, candied yellow fruits, sweet spices and limestone minerality, leading to a very long, savoury, pure and persistent finish.
99/100 — La Revue du Vin de France
La Revue du Vin de France awarded 99/100 to Château Climens 2007, praising a complex and subtle nose driven by fine spices, candied fruits, herbal infusion and honey, as well as an immense, precise and perfectly balanced palate. Wine Advocate also awarded it 98/100, describing a pure, honeyed, floral and spicy Barsac with great persistence and remarkable potential.
Expression of the 2007 vintage
The 2007 vintage gives Climens a particularly accomplished expression: noble botrytis, natural richness, aromatic purity and Barsac freshness. Today, the wine is beginning to enter a phase of great complexity while retaining remarkable energy. It can be served now at around 10 to 12°C, yet still has a very long ageing potential.
In summary: a Château Climens 2007 awarded 99 points by La Revue du Vin de France, a Barsac Premier Cru Classé made from 100% Sémillon, marked by honey, candied apricot, quince, citrus, saffron, great limestone freshness and an immense finish.
Food pairings: foie gras, cream-based poultry dishes, lobster, langoustines, spicy Asian cuisine, blue cheeses, Roquefort, aged Comté, tarte Tatin, apricot desserts, crème brûlée or a contemplative tasting at the end of a meal.
