Château Climens 2006 — Barsac Premier Cru Classé
This Château Climens 2006 offers a noble, dense and refined expression of Barsac. Made exclusively from Sémillon, it embodies the singular style of Climens: deep sweetness, great aromatic precision, limestone freshness and the luminous elegance that distinguishes the finest sweet wines of Barsac.
The 2006 vintage, shaped by a delicate and highly selective harvest, gives here a rich, concentrated and still very lively wine. Honey, quince, marmalade, apricot, candied citrus, sweet spices and floral notes compose a Barsac that is ample, creamy and tense, now entering a phase of beautiful complexity.
Terroir: Barsac, limestone and the precision of Sémillon
Château Climens is one of the historic great names of Barsac. Its limestone soils give the wines a particular freshness, a saline sensation and a tension that naturally balance the richness of botrytis. This limestone architecture allows the sweetness to remain pure, precise and never heavy.
The 2006 harvest was carried out in four successive selective pickings, from 13 September to 5 October, in order to select grapes affected by noble rot at the right level of concentration. With 156.2 g/L of residual sugar, the wine offers remarkable richness, supported by freshness that lengthens the finish and refines the overall balance.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep gold with early amber reflections, brilliant and luminous, with fine viscosity in the glass and evolution that is now perceptible yet still beautifully controlled.
Nose: complex and expressive, with honey, marmalade, quince, ripe apricot, candied orange, lemon, pear, sweet spices, vanilla, cream, dried fruits and a floral touch. With aeration, nuances of saffron, tea, fine mint, beeswax, toasted hazelnut and warm stone may appear.
Palate: ample, rich and creamy, with deep sweetness, silky texture and beautiful freshness. The wine combines honey, marmalade, quince, candied yellow fruits, spice, vanilla and citrus, leading to a long, savoury and precise finish carried by very elegant limestone tension.
99/100 — Anthocyanes
Anthocyanes awarded 99/100 to Château Climens 2006, praising a high-quality bouquet built around orange, quince, pear and spice, as well as a dense, crystalline and precise palate with very fine ageing potential. Wine Advocate also awarded it 94/100, describing a harmonious Climens marked by honeyed marmalade, quince, botrytis and remarkable tension. Wine Spectator also gave it 94/100, highlighting honey, toffee, lemon, orange, apricot, vanilla and spice.
Expression of the 2006 vintage
The 2006 vintage gives Climens a denser and creamier expression than some more airy vintages, yet always balanced by the freshness that defines Barsac. Today, the wine is beginning to reveal a very seductive mature complexity, between candied fruits, honey, citrus, spice, wax and lightly toasted notes. It can be served now at around 10 to 12°C, while still retaining fine ageing potential.
In summary: a Château Climens 2006 awarded 99 points by Anthocyanes, a Barsac Premier Cru Classé made from 100% Sémillon, marked by honey, quince, marmalade, apricot, candied citrus, spice, creamy texture and fine limestone freshness.
Food pairings: foie gras, cream-based poultry dishes, lobster, langoustines, spicy Asian cuisine, blue cheeses, Roquefort, aged Comté, tarte Tatin, apricot desserts, crème brûlée or a contemplative tasting at the end of a meal.
