Château Climens 2005 — Barsac Premier Cru Classé
This Château Climens 2005 embodies an opulent, luminous and deeply refined expression of the great sweet wines of Barsac. An emblematic Premier Cru Classé, Climens is distinguished by the purity of its botrytised Sémillon, the precision of its limestone terroir and a freshness that elegantly balances the natural richness of the vintage.
The 2005 vintage, warm and dry before September rains encouraged the development of noble rot, gives here a generous, dense and remarkably balanced wine. Candied apricot, pear, orange marmalade, honey, saffron, candied citrus, sweet spices and beeswax shape a Barsac of amplitude, depth and enduring energy.
Terroir: Barsac, limestone and the precision of botrytis
Château Climens is one of the historic great names of Barsac. Its limestone soils bring a distinctive freshness, a saline sensation and a tension that allow the sweetness to remain pure, precise and never heavy. This mineral architecture sets Climens apart among the great sweet wines of Bordeaux.
Made exclusively from 100% Sémillon, the 2005 vintage was harvested in five successive selective pickings, from 26 September to 28 October. With 168.7 g/L of residual sugar, it offers significant richness, perfectly supported by a low pH and a freshness that lengthens the finish.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep gold with amber reflections, brilliant and luminous, with fine viscosity in the glass and evolution that is now perceptible yet still remarkably controlled.
Nose: rich, refined and highly expressive, with ripe pear, candied apricot, yellow peach, orange marmalade, candied lemon, roasted pineapple, honey, saffron, beeswax, fine spices and a touch of fresh mint. With aeration, nuances of pastry cream, tea, dried flowers, tropical fruit and warm stone may appear.
Palate: ample, powerful and silky, with generous sweetness, an enveloping texture and surprising freshness. The wine combines candied fruits, honey, citrus, spices, saffron and limestone minerality in a very long, immersive, saline and perfectly balanced finish.
99/100 — La Revue du Vin de France
La Revue du Vin de France awarded 99/100 to Château Climens 2005, praising an open, rich and refined nose marked by wild mint, pear and candied citrus, as well as a powerful yet elegant palate, driven by surprising freshness and a very long finish. The Wine Independent also awarded it 96/100, while Vinous and Wine Spectator each gave it 95/100.
Expression of the 2005 vintage
The 2005 vintage gives Climens a more opulent and richer expression than some more aerial vintages, while preserving the limestone elegance that defines Barsac. Today, the wine is entering a phase of great complexity, between candied fruits, honey, citrus, saffron, wax, spices and the first pastry-like nuances. It can be served now at around 10 to 12°C, while still retaining very fine ageing potential.
In summary: a Château Climens 2005 awarded 99 points by La Revue du Vin de France, a Barsac Premier Cru Classé made from 100% Sémillon, marked by pear, candied apricot, marmalade, honey, saffron, candied citrus, deep sweetness and great limestone freshness.
Food pairings: foie gras, cream-based poultry dishes, lobster, langoustines, spicy Asian cuisine, blue cheeses, Roquefort, aged Comté, tarte Tatin, apricot desserts, crème brûlée or a contemplative tasting at the end of a meal.
