Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de Montceau 2018 — Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet

The Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de Montceau 2018 from Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet is a refined white Burgundy made from Chardonnay, sourced from a limestone-rich Premier Cru site in Saint-Aubin. Based in Gamay, the historic hamlet of Saint-Aubin, the domaine is admired for precise, long and deeply mineral white wines from the Côte de Beaune.

The 2018 vintage brings generosity and luminosity, while the Clos de Montceau terroir preserves tension, saline freshness and chalky precision. Preserved lemon, mandarin, pear, white flowers, fresh almond, subtle toasted notes and wet stone shape a Chardonnay that is elegant, expressive and beautifully balanced.

Clos de Montceau, limestone tension and Saint-Aubin freshness

Clos de Montceau gives a fine, vertical and energetic expression of Saint-Aubin. Its limestone-influenced soils bring Chardonnay a saline, chalky and precise profile, with less opulence than Meursault and a more direct mineral line.

At Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet, the style favours ripe but measured fruit, careful élevage and a clear expression of terroir. The result is a white Burgundy with texture, brightness and persistence, combining the charm of the 2018 vintage with the freshness expected from a serious Saint-Aubin Premier Cru.

Tasting notes

Appearance: bright pale gold, luminous and clear, with fine visual density.

Nose: precise and elegant, with preserved lemon, mandarin, pear, white flowers and fresh almond. With air, subtle notes of toast, hazelnut, citrus zest, chalk and wet stone emerge.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, lively and harmonious, with a silky texture, clear acidity and fine saline tension. The finish is long, chalky and citrus-driven, leaving a persistent impression of freshness and minerality.

The 2018 vintage and service

The 2018 vintage gave white Burgundy a ripe and generous profile, yet this Saint-Aubin retains excellent balance through its limestone freshness and precise structure. It is now entering a very attractive drinking phase, with enough depth to accompany refined cuisine.

Serve at around 11 to 12°C in large Burgundy glasses. A short, gradual opening will help reveal the citrus, white flower, almond and chalk notes while preserving the wine’s tension.

Key points: a refined Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Clos de Montceau 2018 from Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet, combining ripe Chardonnay fruit, saline freshness, chalky texture and the mineral precision of a fine Côte de Beaune white.

Food pairings: seared scallops, sole meunière, turbot with beurre blanc, langoustines, chicken in cream sauce, mushroom risotto, veal with morels, aged Comté or delicate Burgundian cuisine.
