Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet et Fils – Saint-Aubin

Grand white Burgundy defined by precision, purity and crystalline expression of Côte de Beaune terroirs

History & family

Based in the hamlet of Gamay in the village of Saint-Aubin, the Bachelet family has been rooted in the Côte de Beaune since the mid-17th century. Vines cultivated by the family were already documented in Chassagne-Montrachet as early as 1648. Today, the domaine is led by Jean-Claude’s sons, Benoît and Jean-Baptiste Bachelet, who have transformed it into one of the most respected and sought-after producers in Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet. Their work is characterised by discretion, precision and a deep respect for the landscape.

Terroir & vineyard

The estate farms 9.5 to 10 hectares of vineyards spread across some of the finest sites of the Côte de Beaune. The core lies in Saint-Aubin, complemented by holdings in Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and a rare parcel in the Grand Cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Exposures generally range from east to southeast, with soils dominated by stony limestone and clay-limestone mixtures, producing wines of tension, minerality and exceptional clarity.

Around 75% of the vineyard is Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Noir. The white wines are known for their purity and precision, while the reds—grown on breezy, well-drained slopes—show lifted red fruit, freshness and refined tannins.

Viticulture & winemaking

Vineyard work lies at the heart of the domaine’s philosophy. Since 2012, the Bachelet brothers have farmed according to biodynamic principles, with full organic certification achieved more recently. Soils are worked carefully, herbicides are avoided, and yields are naturally limited. Each parcel is monitored individually to achieve the ideal balance between ripeness, freshness and mineral tension.

In the cellar, the focus is on clarity of terroir. Gentle pressing, slow fermentations with indigenous yeasts and long ageing on fine lees—often across two winters—are key elements. New oak is used sparingly, ensuring that the wines remain driven by fruit, chalk and mineral resonance rather than wood. This low-intervention approach results in wines of depth, finesse and long ageing potential.

Wine style

The wines of Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet et Fils stand out for their aromatic precision, chiselled minerality and elegant, crystalline textures. The whites display notes of white orchard fruits, citrus zest, white flowers and crushed stone, with fine acidity and saline, elongated finishes. The reds offer pure red fruit, floral lift, delicately spiced undertones and silky tannins. Across the range, the style is defined by harmony, transparency and energy.

Signature cuvées

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru – A flagship cuvée and one of the domaine’s rarest wines. Deep, textural, long and mineral, it reflects the grandeur of this legendary Grand Cru with remarkable finesse and ageing capacity.

Saint-Aubin 1er Cru “Les Murgers des Dents de Chien” – One of the domaine’s most sought-after wines. Vibrant citrus, tension, salinity and a long, vertical, chalk-infused finish.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru “Les Macherelles” – A broader, deeper expression of Chardonnay, with ripe fruit, layered texture and a sapid, mineral-driven finish supported by noble bitters.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Sous le Puits” & “Les Aubues” – Highly refined Puligny marked by floral lift, chalky tension, crystalline acidity and a precise, lingering saline finish.

Village & Bourgogne appellations – The Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet and regional Bourgogne wines offer a perfect introduction to the domaine’s style: elegant, focused and always expressive of their limestone origins.
