Description

The 2019 Taupenot‑Merme Charmes‑Chambertin Grand Cru begins with a rich deep ruby colour. The nose is initially a bit closed, tight, needing some air to fully open. As it develops, one finds vibrant red berry aromas — cherry, raspberry, red currant — interwoven with briary nuances (wild bramble), tea leaf, a touch of green herbal / sauvage character, and faint florals (violet, rose petal). There is also a subtle earthiness: damp forest floor, moss, and a mineral note — wet stone or crushed rock — that gives an energetic spine.

Mid‑palate, the wine is medium to full in body. Tannins are firm but well balanced; fine‑grained rather than coarse. The fruit is juicy, vibrant, with red berry core, perhaps a little darker edge (black cherry) towards the finish. There is noticeable oak influence, lightly toasted, with spice (white pepper, maybe clove), and cedar, but used with restraint. Acidity is clean, bright, lifting the palate, lending freshness and preventing heaviness.

The finish is saline, persistent, with a mix of red fruit echo, spice, dry herbs, earthy undertones. In magnum format, one can expect this wine to evolve more gradually: the tannins soften more slowly, tertiary notes (leather, underbrush, truffle) will emerge over time, and the balance will gain complexity. Drinking window might begin around 2024‑2026 for early approachability, but full potential likely in 2035‑2055 (or more) with good storage.

Appearance: Deep ruby-red with garnet highlights.
Nose: Complex and expressive, combining ripe dark fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry), sweet spices, licorice, and subtle smoky oak. With aeration, nuances of forest floor and truffle emerge.
Palate: Broad and structured, with rich yet velvety texture. The tannins are fine but powerful, balanced by remarkable freshness. Dark fruit and spice flavors unfold harmoniously, underlined by the minerality of the terroir.
Finish: Long, elegant and persistent, showing both depth and refinement.
