Pommard 1er Cru “Rugiens-Bas” 2009 — Domaine Hubert de Montille, Magnum 1.5 L
The Pommard 1er Cru “Rugiens-Bas” 2009 from Domaine Hubert de Montille, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, is a major red Burgundy from one of the most prestigious terroirs of Pommard. Made from Pinot Noir, it combines the natural power of Rugiens-Bas with the classical precision, freshness and structure associated with Domaine de Montille.
The magnum format adds particular interest to this bottle. It allows slower, more harmonious ageing, preserving freshness, aromatic definition and texture over time. In a generous vintage such as 2009, this larger format gives the wine additional balance and makes it especially attractive for collectors, fine dining and long cellar ageing.
Rugiens-Bas, the Grand Cru spirit of Pommard
Rugiens-Bas is widely regarded as one of the greatest Premier Cru sites in Pommard, and one of the Côte de Beaune vineyards most often discussed for Grand Cru-level stature. Its name refers to the reddish colour of the iron-rich clays found in the soil, a signature that contributes to the wine’s depth, structure and distinctive savoury energy.
Rugiens-Bas gives Pinot Noir a more complete and commanding expression than many neighbouring Pommard climats: powerful but not rustic, deep but refined, structured yet capable of remarkable aromatic complexity. At Domaine de Montille, this terroir is interpreted with clarity and restraint, allowing the mineral frame and long finish to remain central.
The Domaine de Montille style
Domaine de Montille is one of the historic names of Volnay and Pommard, known for wines that favour terroir expression, ageing potential and structural precision over easy richness. The domaine’s style remains deeply linked to Hubert de Montille’s classical approach, while today offering more aromatic openness and silkier textures.
In this 2009 Rugiens-Bas, the use of a significant proportion of whole clusters adds lift, spice and tension to the naturally ripe character of the vintage. The result is not a heavy Pommard, but a deep, graceful and firmly built Premier Cru with both presence and refinement.
The 2009 Burgundy vintage
The 2009 vintage in Burgundy is known for its generosity, ripe fruit and seductive texture. The red wines often show more immediate charm than in cooler, more austere years, with rounded tannins, expressive aromatics and a generous mid-palate.
In Rugiens-Bas, this vintage character brings depth and volume without erasing the terroir’s serious structure. The wine combines ripe red fruit, floral lift, spice, mineral drive and a long, firmly etched finish. In magnum, it should continue to evolve with added poise and freshness.
