Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2010 — Domaine Ponsot

This Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2010 from Domaine Ponsot embodies one of the noblest, deepest and most aristocratic expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin. A mythical Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Bèze gives Pinot Noir of rare intensity, at once powerful, floral, spicy and profoundly mineral: black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, plum, old rose, violet, fine spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, black tea and a long saline finish.

Domaine Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s great historic signatures, renowned for wines of character, depth and great longevity. Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is among the most prestigious climats of the entire Côte d’Or, capable of combining power, noble tannic structure, perfume and exceptional length. The 2010 vintage brings freshness, precision, tension and remarkable balance, offering a Grand Cru built for slow and complex evolution.

The spirit of the wine

A great Clos de Bèze of depth, tension and nobility, where the natural power of the cru remains carried by the precision of the 2010 vintage. The wine combines red and black fruits, flowers, spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor and minerality, with a dense, silky, structured and highly persistent palate. It is a Grand Cru of character, patience and great ageing potential, faithful to the singular signature of Domaine Ponsot.

Terroir: Clos de Bèze, grandeur and depth in Gevrey-Chambertin

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze is one of the most illustrious Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. Its clay-limestone soils, marls and stony elements give Pinot Noir an expression that is structured, deep and intensely perfumed. The cru is distinguished by its ability to unite power, floral finesse, mineral energy and outstanding length.

At Domaine Ponsot, Clos de Bèze translates into a wine of great presence, capable of lasting for decades while gradually developing complexity of forest floor, spices, fine leather, truffle and noble earth. In 2010, the freshness of the vintage highlights fruit precision, tannic finesse and mineral tension, giving a wine that is less demonstrative than profoundly distinguished.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, clay, limestone, marl, black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, old rose, violet, fine spices, noble earth and persistent minerality.

Domaine Ponsot signature: depth, character, age-worthy structure, terroir expression, pure fruit, spice, broad texture and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby slowly evolving towards garnet, bright, dense and still well sustained. The colour reflects the concentration of the Grand Cru, the freshness of the 2010 vintage and an evolution that remains measured, moving gradually towards greater aromatic maturity.

Nose: deep, pure and progressively complex, with black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, plum, red and black fruits, old rose, violet, fine spices, liquorice and noble earth. With aeration, nuances of forest floor, fine leather, black tea, cocoa, sweet pepper, bark, light truffle and limestone minerality may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, silky and still structured, with precise fruit carried by great mineral energy. Flavours of black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, spices, liquorice, fine earth, forest floor and leather unfold with depth, supported by noble tannins and clear freshness. The finish is very long, saline, mineral and delicately spicy, with an impression of controlled power, nobility and great Burgundian persistence.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, plum, red and black fruits, deep berries.

Flowers and spices: old rose, violet, fine spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, black tea, deep Gevrey perfume.

Evolution and terroir: noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, cocoa, bark, light truffle, limestone minerality, noble tannins.

Overall impression: powerful, distinguished and complex Grand Cru, with silky texture, earthy depth and a very long saline, mineral finish.

Expression of the 2010 vintage

The 2010 vintage in Burgundy produced red wines that are fresh, precise, taut and often remarkably balanced, with great fruit purity and a structure built for ageing. In the great terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin, this year particularly highlights the nobility of Pinot Noir, tannic finesse, mineral tension and aromatic length.

Today, this Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2010 remains youthful in its evolution and has very great ageing potential. It can already reveal its depth after measured aeration, but will gain further complexity with time: forest floor, fine leather, truffle, black tea, cocoa, melted spices, noble earth and mineral nuances should gradually join the purity of red and black fruit.

In summary: a deep, distinguished and structured Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2010, driven by the precision of the vintage, the grandeur of the climat and the characterful signature of Domaine Ponsot.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, cassis, plum, old rose, violet, fine spices, liquorice, noble earth, forest floor, fine leather, black tea, light truffle and a long saline finish.
