Bérêche & Fils — One of the Great Signatures of Artisanal Champagne

Founded in 1847 and based in Ludes, on the Montagne de Reims, Bérêche & Fils is now one of the most sought-after names in grower Champagne. Long rooted in family tradition, the estate has experienced a remarkable revival under the guidance of Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche.

Their work has given the house a clear and immediately recognisable identity: precise, deep and expressive Champagnes built around place, ripe fruit, texture and natural tension. Bérêche & Fils does not seek uniformity, but a living interpretation of Champagne terroirs, with constant attention to balance, substance and purity of expression.

The spirit of the house

Bérêche & Fils embodies a Champagne of character, deeply connected to the vineyard. Each cuvée seeks to express the identity of a blend, a village or a specific place: balanced ripeness, separate vinifications, long ageing, discreet dosage and fine bubbles serving the depth of the wine.

History

The history of Bérêche & Fils began in the nineteenth century, with the foundation of the house in 1847. Anchored in Ludes, the family belongs to the tradition of independent winegrowers attached to the vineyard, the soils and deliberately limited production.

The modern turning point came in the early 2000s with Raphaël Bérêche, soon joined by his brother Vincent. Together, they refined the parcel-based work, strengthened the vineyard approach, developed freer vinifications and gave each cuvée a more clearly defined identity. This evolution has placed Bérêche & Fils among the emblematic houses of Champagne’s contemporary renewal.

Terroirs and viticulture

The historic heart of the house lies in Ludes, on the Montagne de Reims, but the estate also works several complementary terroirs, notably around Ormes, Mareuil-le-Port, Trépail and selected premier cru and grand cru sectors. This diversity allows Bérêche & Fils to express Champagne’s three main grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier.

The vineyard is farmed with close attention to soil life, natural balance and precise ripeness. Work is carried out parcel by parcel, with soil cultivation, careful observation of the vine, manual harvesting and rigorous grape selection. This demanding approach gives rise to expressive Champagnes that are never heavy, where substance is always carried by energy and freshness.

Winemaking and Champagne style

Vinification is one of the house’s defining features. Grapes are vinified separately according to their origin, often in barrels or demi-muids, in order to preserve the personality of each terroir. Ageing is long, oak remains discreet, and dosage is always carefully measured to maintain the balance of the wine.

The Bérêche style combines depth, precision and energy. The Champagnes have a true vinous dimension, fine bubbles, carefully shaped texture and a finish that is often chalky, saline and persistent. They can be enjoyed young for their brightness, yet often gain complexity after a few years in the cellar, developing notes of dried fruits, gentle spices, fine honey and light pastry.

Emblematic cuvées

Brut Réserve — the entry point into the Bérêche universe, a Champagne of balance, tension and depth, made from the three main Champagne grape varieties.

Reflet d’Antan — an emblematic cuvée based on a perpetual reserve, deep, complex, textured and long on the finish.

Rive Gauche — a delicate and refined expression of Meunier, notably from Mareuil-le-Port, combining fruit, floral notes and finesse.

Le Cran — a cuvée from Ludes, structured, mineral and gastronomic, marked by the depth of the Montagne de Reims.

Rilly-la-Montagne — a Premier Cru Pinot Noir combining vinosity, red fruit, tension and precision.

Mailly Grand Cru — a rarer and more structured expression of Pinot Noir from a grand terroir, straight, deep and made for the table.

Ambonnay Grand Cru — an intense and vinous cuvée, shaped by the noble power of Pinot Noir from one of Champagne’s great villages.

Campania Remensis — a characterful rosé, fine, expressive and gastronomic, delicate in fruit yet serious in structure.

Cellaring and food pairings

Bérêche Champagnes offer excellent ageing potential, especially the single-parcel cuvées, grand terroir bottlings and wines based on perpetual reserves. Their depth and vinous character make them particularly suited to the table: noble fish, seafood, poultry, sweetbreads, mature cheeses, mushrooms, creamy dishes, citrus-led preparations and lightly spiced cuisine.
