Weingut Wegelin — The Alpine Precision of Great Wines from Malans
Weingut Wegelin is one of the historic estates of Malans, at the heart of the Bündner Herrschaft, one of Switzerland’s most renowned wine regions. Based around the Scadenagut, an old agricultural estate located below Bothmar Castle, it has become a reference for alpine Pinot Noir, great whites from Burgundian varieties and distinctive Grisons specialities.
Long shaped by Peter Wegelin, an important figure in the qualitative revival of the Grisons, the estate is now led by Rafael Hug, in charge since 2019, together with oenologist Mathilde Hug Pédeutour. Their work has strengthened the parcel-based approach, the precision of ripeness and the expression of the Malans slopes, within an organic and biodynamic philosophy centred on soil life.
A pure and precise alpine expression of the terroirs of Malans. Weingut Wegelin seeks straight, elegant wines deeply rooted in their sites: fine Pinot Noirs, taut whites, dry sparkling wines and parcel-based cuvées where freshness, minerality and the energy of the Grisons slopes remain at the forefront.
History: from Scadenagut to contemporary renewal
The estate is closely linked to the Scadenagut, a historic property in Malans acquired by the Wegelin family in the mid-20th century. Under Peter Wegelin, the domaine gradually rose among the key references of the Bündner Herrschaft, with particular attention paid to grape quality, wine precision and the potential of Pinot Noir in the Grisons.
In 2019, a new chapter began with Rafael Hug taking over operational management, alongside Mathilde Hug Pédeutour. Both trained as oenologists, they continue the estate’s heritage while placing even greater emphasis on parcel expression and biodynamics. The finest wines are now conceived as precise expressions of place.
This evolution gives Wegelin a particularly contemporary identity: respect for history, a Burgundian-inspired reading of climats, alpine precision and a desire to produce original, transparent and deeply Swiss wines.
Terroirs: Malans, alpine slopes and limestone soils
The estate farms a small vineyard in Malans, often presented at around 5.5 to 6 hectares, depending on the parcels worked and the vintage. For a professional merchant page, it is best described as a compact, highly precise vineyard strongly oriented towards site-specific cuvées.
The vines grow on the slopes and terraces of Malans, in an alpine environment marked by natural ventilation, temperature variation and the influence of the foehn. These conditions allow the grapes to reach fine ripeness while preserving remarkable freshness, a central element in the style of great Grisons wines.
The soils combine limestone, marl, stony scree and formations typical of the Bündner Schuttboden. They give the wines mineral tension, discreet salinity and fine structure. Sites such as Scadena, Bothmarhalde, Frassa, Weisstorkel and Spiger allow a detailed reading of the nuances of Malans.
Terroir expression: Malans, Bündner Herrschaft, Scadenagut, alpine slopes, limestone, marl, scree, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Completer, freshness and mineral energy.
Wegelin signature: biodynamics, parcel-based cuvées, precise ripeness, careful ageing, alpine Pinot Noirs, taut great whites and a clear expression of place.
Viticulture: biodynamics, biodiversity and precise ripeness
Wegelin’s viticulture is based on an organic and biodynamic approach, with particular attention paid to soil vitality, biodiversity and the natural balance of the vines. The estate seeks to cultivate healthy, expressive grapes capable of translating the differences between each hillside site.
Yields are controlled, harvesting is manual and grape selection is rigorous. In this alpine context, the precision of the picking date is essential: the aim is to preserve freshness and energy, without sacrificing aromatic ripeness or textural depth.
Young Pinot Noir: raspberry, red cherry, sour cherry, fine blackberry, peony, dried flowers, soft pepper, alpine herbs, warm stone and lightly smoky notes.
Mature Pinot Noir: forest floor, black tea, fine spices, delicate leather, candied red fruits, blond tobacco, noble mushroom and elegant earthy nuances.
Whites: lemon, pear, yellow apple, white flowers, fresh almond, wet stone, chalk, ripe citrus, salinity and a crystalline finish.
Overall impression: fine, precise and luminous alpine wines, where freshness structures the palate and extends the finish.
Vinification: parcel precision and discreet ageing
In the cellar, Wegelin favours precise vinification adapted to each grape variety and each site. The finest wines are vinified according to their parcel origin, in order to preserve differences in soil, exposure and ripeness. Interventions remain measured, with a focus on purity, balance and clarity.
Reds: lot-by-lot vinification, measured extraction, destemming adapted to each cuvée, and a search for fine tannins and clear fruit.
Whites: vinification focused on tension, texture and precision, in tanks or barrels depending on the desired profile.
Ageing: barrels, larger casks or adapted vessels, with discreet oak influence and work centred on textural finesse.
Philosophy: accompany the expression of each place without embellishment, favouring tension, elegance and aromatic clarity.
Wine style
The wines of Weingut Wegelin stand out for their alpine energy and great aromatic purity. The Pinot Noirs show fine, floral and spicy profiles, with silky tannins, precise substance and a finish often carried by freshness and minerality.
The whites reveal a more taut and crystalline side of the estate: terroir-driven Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Completer and other local specialities, always in a dry, precise and gastronomic register. The range as a whole is refined, deeply connected to Malans and to the alpine balance of the Bündner Herrschaft.
Emblematic cuvées
Malanser Blauburgunder: a village Pinot Noir, fruity, elegant and precise, offering an accessible yet serious introduction to the Wegelin style.
Scadena Blauburgunder: the estate’s flagship parcel-based cuvée, deep, refined and highly representative of the Scadenagut identity.
Weisstorkel Blauburgunder: a characterful Pinot Noir, more structured and spicy, with fine aromatic depth and genuine ageing potential.
Bothmarhalde Chardonnay: a great terroir-driven white, taut, deep and saline, from one of the emblematic sites of Malans.
Frassa Chardonnay: a precise and luminous Chardonnay, vinified in a parcel-based spirit, with fine tension and refined texture.
Completer Spiger: a cuvée from the historic grape variety of the Grisons, deep, saline and structured, capable of developing fine complexity with time.
Scampagna Extra Brut: a dry, fresh and precise sparkling wine, offering an alpine and gastronomic expression of Grisons bubbles.
Ageing and gastronomic pairings
Wegelin’s parcel-based Pinot Noirs can evolve gracefully for several years, especially Scadena and Weisstorkel. The great whites, particularly Chardonnay and Completer, also show fine ageing potential, gaining complexity, texture and saline nuance over time.
The Pinot Noirs pair beautifully with roast poultry, duck, veal, fine game, mushrooms, herb-led cuisine, mature cheeses and refined alpine dishes. The whites work well with noble fish, shellfish, poultry in cream sauce, soft cheeses, asparagus, citrus-led cuisine and preparations with fine herbs.
