Domaine Ostertag embodies a sensitive, biodynamic and deeply expressive vision of Alsace. In Epfig, André and now Arthur Ostertag craft Rieslings, Pinots and single-vineyard cuvées of remarkable purity, shaped by the energy of the soils, refined textures and a poetic reading of Alsace’s finest terroirs.
Founded in 1966 in Epfig, on the Alsace Wine Route, Domaine Ostertag has become one of the region’s most distinctive and respected estates. Under the influence of André Ostertag, a poet-vigneron and early advocate of organic and biodynamic farming, the domaine developed a highly personal identity, combining sensitive vineyard interpretation with a precise, thoughtful approach to winemaking.
Since 2018, his son Arthur Ostertag has carried this legacy forward with clarity and restraint, preserving the family spirit while bringing a new energy to the wines. The estate now covers around 15 hectares, divided into a mosaic of small parcels around Epfig, Fronholz, Zellberg, Clos Mathis and the Grand Cru Muenchberg.
Domaine Ostertag produces Alsace wines of purity, movement and quiet intensity. The aim is not effect, but accuracy: slender, textured and luminous wines in which mineral energy, fruit and soil expression unfold with natural grace.
Although the domaine was established in 1966, it was André Ostertag who gave it its singular voice. Trained in Beaune, he developed a parcel-based vision of Alsace inspired by Burgundy, placing the personality of each site above a purely varietal reading of the wines.
This approach deeply shaped the estate’s style. Each cuvée seeks to express a soil, an exposure and a natural balance. The gradual move to organic and then biodynamic farming followed the same desire: to let the vineyard speak with greater clarity and coherence.
With Arthur Ostertag, the continuity is clear, while the wines have gained further purity and readability. Today, Domaine Ostertag remains a major reference for lovers of contemporary Alsace: demanding, expressive and profoundly gastronomic.
Domaine Ostertag works with a wide range of soils around Epfig, in the winegrowing heart of the Bas-Rhin. This mosaic of parcels reveals several faces of Alsace, from sandstone, marl, clay and sand to limestone-influenced and more volcanic expressions depending on the site.
The Grand Cru Muenchberg plays a central role in the estate’s identity. This remarkable hillside, marked by its relief and volcanic sandstone soils, produces Rieslings of depth, drive and long persistence. Fronholz, Zellberg and Clos Mathis complete this parcel-based approach, offering more floral, spicy, saline or structured expressions according to grape variety and soil.
Expression of place: Epfig, Fronholz, Zellberg, Clos Mathis, Muenchberg, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, mineral energy, pure fruit and impressive poise.
Ostertag signature: biodynamic wines of texture, balance and aromatic depth, shaped by a transparent reading of their soils.
Certified biodynamic, Domaine Ostertag works its vineyards with close attention to natural balance. The soils are ploughed, composts and plant-based preparations accompany the growing season, and harvesting is carried out by hand to preserve the integrity of the fruit.
In the cellar, fermentations rely on indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place, depending on the cuvée, in large oak foudres, stainless steel tanks or barrels, with limited intervention. The purpose is never to standardise the wine, but to let each parcel find its own rhythm, balance and voice.
This philosophy gives wines that feel both free and disciplined, with measured ripeness, carefully held texture and aromatic expression carried by a strong inner energy.
Domaine Ostertag wines are known for their purity, vibration and often pronounced mineral character. The Rieslings may be floral, smoky, saline or deeply structured depending on the site, yet they always retain a clear line and a strong sense of inner tension.
The Pinots offer more flesh, spice and density, without losing the lift that defines the estate. The great sweet wines, particularly the Sélections de Grains Nobles, combine richness, complexity and lightness of touch, placing them among the most refined expressions of Alsace.
Whether blended or drawn from a single parcel, each cuvée retains the impression of a living wine, built more on the energy of place than on the pursuit of power.
Riesling Les Jardins: a cuvée from varied soils, pure, readable and vibrant, ideal for understanding the estate’s style.
Riesling Grand Cru Muenchberg: one of the domaine’s great wines, deep, floral, structured and built for long cellaring.
Pinot Gris Zellberg: a broad, spicy and well-built wine, carried by a fine mineral frame.
Fronholz, Clos Mathis and other single-vineyard cuvées: precise expressions of soils, slopes and grape varieties, each revealing a different facet of Alsace.
Gewurztraminer Sélection de Grains Nobles: a rare sweet wine, rich yet airy, with notes of honey, candied fruit, fine spice and exotic flowers.
The great Rieslings from Domaine Ostertag, especially those from Muenchberg or other strongly marked sites, can evolve gracefully for many years. With age, they develop notes of candied citrus, warm stone, spice, dried herbs and sometimes a delicate smoky nuance.
At the table, the Rieslings pair beautifully with noble fish, shellfish, poultry, refined Asian cuisine, goat’s cheese and herb-led dishes. Pinot Gris works well with white meats, mushrooms, gently spiced cuisine and mature cheeses. Gewurztraminer and SGN naturally belong with foie gras, fruit-based desserts, blue cheeses or contemplative tasting moments.
