Château Suduiraut — The Golden Jewel of Sauternes
A Premier Cru Classé of 1855 with timeless elegance, expressing the full brilliance of noble rot and centuries of savoir-faire.
A Historic Treasure in the Heart of Sauternes
Château Suduiraut, classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, is one of the most celebrated names in Sauternes. Located in Preignac, the estate spans around 80 hectares of vineyards bathed in the morning mists of the Ciron and the Garonne — ideal conditions for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). Heir to a long family tradition, the château has successfully combined heritage and modern techniques to craft wines of great purity, richness, balance, and exceptional longevity.
Terroir & Grapes — Fine Gravel and White Clay
The vineyard rests on a base of sandy gravel and white clay, retaining heat and ensuring optimal ripening. The grape varieties are dominated by:
- Sémillon (≈85%) — structure, richness and volume
- Sauvignon Blanc (≈10%) — freshness and liveliness
- Muscadelle (occasional) — aromatic complexity and floral finesse
This unique combination of soils and microclimate promotes regular and intense botrytization, yielding grapes of exceptional concentration and aromatic depth.
Viticulture & Winemaking — Patience and Precision
Yields are intentionally low. The harvest is manual and carried out in successive passes, selecting only perfectly botrytized berries. Parcel-by-parcel vinification is conducted in stainless steel vats or seasoned oak barrels to faithfully express the character of each terroir.
Ageing lasts 18 to 24 months in barrels, with 30 to 40% new oak, allowing slow, harmonious evolution while preserving the wine’s natural tension and freshness.
Style & Cuvées
Château Suduiraut (Grand Vin) — a majestic, complex wine with a deep golden hue. Aromas of acacia honey, candied apricot, roasted pineapple, sweet spices and saffron. On the palate, a generous texture balanced by saline tension and dazzling freshness. Exceptional ageing potential.
Château de Suduiraut (Second Wine) — more approachable in its youth, offering a lighter and more floral expression of the terroir, while retaining the estate’s trademark elegance and precision.
