Maison en Belles Lies – Pierre Fenals
Nestled in Saint-Aubin, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, Maison en Belles Lies – Pierre Fenals stands out as one of Burgundy’s most distinctive and respected artisanal domaines. Founded in 2009 by Pierre Fenals, a passionate autodidact, the estate has become a benchmark in the world of natural wines through strict biodynamic farming and remarkably pure winemaking.
Personality & Philosophy
After a career in fashion and finance, Pierre Fenals discovered biodynamics through the writings of Rudolf Steiner. Trained by Emmanuel Giboulot, he settled in Saint-Aubin in 2009 to found his own domaine. The name “Belles Lies” pays tribute to a 17th-century monastic tradition of rubbing barrels with the lees to nourish the wine — a symbol of patience, care and authenticity.
Terroir & Vineyard
The domaine farms around 6 hectares of vines, both owned and leased, spread across several prestigious appellations:
- Communal & Regional: Bourgogne, Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Saint-Aubin, Santenay, Maranges, Monthélie
- Grands Crus: Corton Grand Cru (red) and Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru (white)
- Grapes: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Aligoté and a small amount of Gamay
- Soils: limestone and marl, stony well-drained terroirs
Viticulture & Winemaking
Pierre Fenals practices strict biodynamic viticulture and fully natural winemaking:
- Hand harvest, low yields
- Exclusively indigenous yeasts
- No chaptalization
- No fining or filtration
- Zero or minimal SO₂ depending on the cuvée
- Long ageing in old 500 L barrels, natural clarification through slow fermentation
This approach allows the terroir to speak for itself, free from oenological manipulation, producing wines of clarity and strong identity.
