Mas Jullien — pioneer of fine modern Languedoc wines

Located in Jonquières at the foot of the Larzac plateau, Mas Jullien is one of the founding estates of Languedoc’s qualitative renaissance. Established in 1985 by Olivier Jullien, the domaine proved that it was possible to produce red and white wines of great complexity and finesse in this region, rivaling the greatest crus of the South of France.

Key People

  • Olivier Jullien — founder and visionary winemaker, a key figure in the Languedoc quality movement.
  • Jullien family — actively involved in the estate’s management and continuity.

Philosophy

Olivier Jullien’s approach is rooted in artisanal craftsmanship: respect for natural balance, low yields, hand harvesting, gentle vinifications and patient élevage. Authenticity of terroir is always favored over stylistic effects, resulting in sincere, precise and remarkably elegant wines.

History & Milestones

  • 1985: Mas Jullien founded by Olivier Jullien on family land.
  • 1990–2000: National and international recognition for the depth and precision of the wines.
  • 2005–2020: Established as one of Languedoc’s benchmark domaines.
  • Today: The estate remains intentionally small-scale, loyal to an artisanal, rural philosophy.

Terroir & Viticulture

Location

  • Region: Languedoc, Terrasses du Larzac (IGP / AOP Languedoc).
  • Vineyard size: approximately 18 hectares.
  • Soils: clay-limestone, schist and rolled pebbles depending on the parcel.
  • Climate: Mediterranean tempered by the cool influence of the Larzac, with significant diurnal shifts.

Viticulture

  • Fully manual vineyard work, respectful of biodiversity.
  • Organic farming practices (not certified but applied for many years).
  • Hand harvesting in small crates with meticulous sorting.
  • Parcel-by-parcel vinifications with indigenous yeasts.
  • Long élevage in foudres, demi-muids and concrete vats, with very little new oak.

Style & Tasting

Reds: deep and balanced, with fine tannins and complex Mediterranean aromatics (black fruits, garrigue, sweet spices, mineral notes). Supple texture and long finish.
Whites: ample yet tense, lightly saline, with floral, stone fruit and wet stone notes.
Overall style: finesse, authenticity and excellent ageing capacity — the signature of Olivier Jullien’s craftsmanship.

Signature Wines

  • Mas Jullien Rouge — a blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre. The estate’s flagship wine: dense, balanced and remarkably complex.
  • Mas Jullien Blanc — Mediterranean blend (Clairette, Chenin, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne): tension, purity and refined texture.
  • Carignan Vieilles Vignes — a rare and sought-after cuvée, offering depth and intensity from old Languedoc vineyards.
