In the hills of Oakville and the Stags Leap District, FUTO Estate embodies one of Napa Valley’s most discreet and sought-after expressions. Founded by Tom and Kyle Futo, the estate crafts rare, deeply structured Cabernet Sauvignon wines shaped by meticulous vineyard work, parcel precision and an uncompromising pursuit of purity.
FUTO Estate — Napa Valley Cabernet in its most discreet and precise form
Founded in the early 2000s by Tom and Kyle Futo, FUTO Estate has become one of the most discreet and coveted names in Napa Valley. Rather than seeking scale or visibility, the estate focuses on detail, parcel selection and the production of wines that combine depth, purity and remarkable control.
FUTO is built around two major vineyard origins: the western hills of Oakville and the cooler slopes of the Stags Leap District. This dual identity gives the wines both Napa richness and a distinctive sense of tension, with Cabernet Sauvignon at the centre of the estate’s finest expressions.
FUTO Estate represents a haute couture vision of Napa Valley: tiny production, meticulous vineyard work and wines of impressive substance, where dark fruit, refined tannins, mineral energy and carefully judged élevage come together in a rare, collectible style.
History: a cult estate born in Oakville
FUTO began with the acquisition of an Oakville hillside site in one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious sectors. From the outset, Tom Futo chose to build a deliberately small estate, focused on precision rather than volume.
The development of the Stags Leap District site, known as 5500, added a second interpretation of Napa Cabernet: cooler, more mineral and marked by rocky slopes. The dialogue between Oakville and Stags Leap is now one of the defining strengths of FUTO Estate.
Terroir: Oakville and Stags Leap District
FUTO’s vineyards are planted on well-drained hillside soils, often rocky, poor and volcanic in character. Oakville brings density, breadth and depth, while the 5500 site in Stags Leap District adds lift, tension and fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, complemented depending on the cuvée by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot or Malbec.
Expression of place: Napa Valley, Oakville, Stags Leap District, rocky hillsides, volcanic soils, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc.
FUTO signature: rare, deep and finely built wines combining pure dark fruit, polished structure, mineral drive and serious cellar potential.
Viticulture and winemaking: parcel rigour and gravity flow
FUTO’s philosophy is based on strict grape selection, parcel-by-parcel harvesting and highly detailed cellar work. Gravity-flow winemaking limits unnecessary handling, while élevage in varied vessels is used to preserve fruit purity, texture and the individual character of each lot.
Style of the wines
FUTO wines are defined by intensity without excess, silky texture and remarkable aromatic clarity. The Cabernet Sauvignon shows blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, graphite, violet, cocoa, sweet spice and mineral notes, with fine tannins and a long, dense yet composed palate. The rare white cuvée offers a brighter, more crystalline expression of Napa Sauvignon Blanc.
Emblematic cuvées
FUTO Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon: the estate’s flagship wine from Oakville, deep, structured and built for long cellaring.
FUTO 5500 Stags Leap District Estate Cabernet Sauvignon: a more lifted and mineral expression of Cabernet from the rocky slopes of Stags Leap.
FUTO Blanc: a rare Sauvignon Blanc, valued for its clarity, aromatic brightness and freshness.
OV/SL and other blends: cuvées drawing on both sites, combining Oakville density with the energy of Stags Leap District.
Cellaring and food pairings
FUTO’s finest reds can age for 15 to 30 years, depending on the vintage and cuvée. They pair beautifully with rib of beef, roast lamb, game, duck, mushroom dishes, reduced sauces and mature cheeses. FUTO Blanc is well suited to shellfish, noble fish, fine poultry and refined Californian cuisine.
