Domaine Benoît Ente is one of the most sought-after names in Puligny-Montrachet. This small family domaine has earned its reputation through white wines of remarkable purity, where Chardonnay expresses the tension, precision and mineral finesse of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Beaune.
Benoît Ente, brother of Arnaud Ente, has built over the years a distinctive identity based on rigorous vineyard work, precise ripeness and restrained vinification. Production remains extremely limited, making the domaine’s cuvées particularly difficult to obtain and highly sought after by lovers of great white Burgundy.
A Burgundy of precision, tension and purity. Benoît Ente seeks straight, chiselled and deeply transparent wines, where ageing supports the substance without ever masking the origin. The domaine’s signature rests on freshness, fine texture, salinity and the distinctive mineral energy of Puligny-Montrachet.
Benoît Ente began vinifying in the late 1980s, before gradually establishing his own domaine from 1997 onwards. Coming from a family deeply connected to Puligny-Montrachet, he developed a personal, patient approach, highly attentive to the balance of each parcel.
The domaine was built around a small vineyard holding, mainly located in Puligny-Montrachet, complemented by a few parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault and regional appellations. Its modest size allows precise work on each site and rigorous grape selection.
In just a few years, Benoît Ente’s wines gained strong recognition among Burgundy enthusiasts. The rarity of the bottles, the consistency of quality and the domaine’s very pure style have made its cuvées highly sought-after references of the Côte de Beaune.
The domaine covers around 6 hectares, depending on the parcels farmed and the vintage. The heart of production lies in Puligny-Montrachet, with village-level vines, premiers crus and regional cuvées of remarkable precision.
The terroirs of Puligny rest on clay-limestone, stony and well-draining soils, capable of giving Chardonnay that rare combination of depth, tension and saline finesse. The domaine also works a few complementary expressions from Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, bringing other nuances of texture and ripeness.
The most emblematic cuvées, such as Clos de la Truffière, Les Referts and Les Folatières – En la Richarde, each express a different facet of Puligny: stony straightness, floral depth, lemon-like energy, saline length and chalky purity.
Terroir expression: Puligny-Montrachet, Clos de la Truffière, Les Referts, Les Folatières, En la Richarde, Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault, limestone, Chardonnay, Aligoté, tension and salinity.
Benoît Ente signature: micro-production, hand harvesting, indigenous yeasts, measured ageing, discreet oak, aromatic purity and remarkable mineral precision.
In the vineyard, Benoît Ente favours a meticulous approach based on soil work, the absence of herbicides and close observation of each parcel. Interventions are adapted to the vintage, with a constant search for balance between ripeness, freshness and energy.
Harvesting is carried out by hand and grapes are selected with rigour. The goal is to pick Chardonnay grapes at perfect ripeness, but never with heaviness, capable of producing wines that are precise, taut and profound. This explains the regularity of the style and the ability of the cuvées to age gracefully.
Youth: lemon, preserved lemon, yellow apple, fresh pear, white peach, white flowers, fresh almond, wet stone, chalk and lightly smoky notes.
Evolution: hazelnut, fine honey, fresh butter, ripe yellow fruits, light brioche, sweet spices, warm stone and saline nuances.
Texture: straight, chiselled and precise palate, fine substance, structuring acidity, mouth-watering finish and great length.
Overall impression: pure, taut and luminous white Burgundies, marked more by precision than by opulence.
In the cellar, pressing is gentle and settling is carried out with precision. Fermentations generally take place with indigenous yeasts, in a low-intervention spirit. Ageing is carried out in barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak, in order to preserve aromatic brightness and the reading of terroir.
Pressing: gentle juice extraction, respect for the finesse of Chardonnay and a search for great purity.
Fermentation: indigenous yeasts, slow fermentations adapted to the rhythm of each cuvée.
Ageing: Burgundian barrels, limited new oak, duration adapted to each cuvée and vintage, with a focus on texture and precision.
Philosophy: accompany the wine without marking it, preserve natural tension and reveal the singularity of each site.
The wines of Domaine Benoît Ente stand out for their purity, straightness and great precision on the palate. The whites are taut, saline, floral and highly transparent, with fine substance and a finish that is often long and chalky.
The style avoids excessive richness or oak. It favours balance, finesse and tension. The finest crus often need a few years of cellaring to fully unfold, but they always retain a strong impression of freshness and clarity.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Truffière: the flagship cuvée of the domaine, from a highly sought-after terroir. A straight, deep and mineral wine, marked by gunflint, citrus and great saline length.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts: a premier cru of finesse, combining floral notes, precise texture, limestone tension and a mouth-watering finish.
Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières – En la Richarde: a slender and luminous expression of Puligny, driven by minerality, white flowers and fine lemony energy.
Chassagne-Montrachet Les Houillères: a broader cuvée, with more flesh, while retaining the tension and precision that define the domaine.
Bourgogne Aligoté Antichtone: a lively, pure and saline Aligoté, crafted with the same care as the Chardonnay cuvées.
Bourgogne Chardonnay Golden Jubilee: a cuvée from old Chardonnay vines, precise, crystalline and beautifully balanced.
The finest whites from Benoît Ente have good ageing potential, often 8 to 15 years depending on the cuvée and vintage, and longer for the premiers crus in great years. The regional and village cuvées can be enjoyed earlier while still retaining real capacity for evolution.
At the table, these wines pair beautifully with noble fish, shellfish, scallops, sole, turbot, poultry in cream sauce, sweetbreads, soft cheeses, citrus-led cuisine, asparagus and mushroom dishes. Their tension and precision are particularly suited to elegant, not overly rich cuisine.
