Domaine David Duband — The Contemporary Energy of Burgundian Pinot Noir

Based in Chevannes, in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Domaine David Duband has become one of the most dynamic and expressive names in contemporary Burgundy. Its wines combine aromatic purity, whole-cluster vinification, silky texture and a precise interpretation of the great climats of the Côte de Nuits.

In 1991, after studying viticulture in Beaune, David Duband vinified under his own name for the first time, using a small selection of family parcels, while the estate had previously sold its harvest to the cooperative. From this modest base, he gradually built a recognised domaine, now present in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and several major Grand Crus.

The spirit of the estate

A Burgundy of energy, fruit and transparency, where whole clusters play a central role in freshness, tension and aromatic complexity. David Duband seeks expressive yet precise wines, driven by vibrant fruit, fine tannins and the identity of each climat.

History: from the family cooperative to a recognised domaine

The family estate was founded by Pierre Duband, David’s father, in the 1960s in Chevannes. For many years, grapes from the family vineyards were sold to the Beaune cooperative. The turning point came in 1991, when David Duband decided to vinify part of the production himself, starting from 1.5 hectares of vines located notably in Nuits-Saint-Georges and in the premiers crus Aux Thorey and Les Procès.

The domaine then grew progressively. A decisive stage came in the mid-2000s with the arrival of prestigious new parcels, notably linked to François Feuillet and the former Truchot-Martin holdings. This evolution considerably broadened the range towards Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin and several Grand Crus, while strengthening the domaine’s reputation among lovers of characterful Pinot Noir.

Terroirs: from the Hautes-Côtes to the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits

The domaine now works a mosaic of terroirs ranging from the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits to some of the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Sources generally mention around 17 to 20 hectares of vines farmed according to an organic approach, sometimes supplemented by grapes purchased on the vine from partners working with respect for the environment.

The range covers a wide spectrum of appellations: Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as Grand Crus such as Charmes-Chambertin, Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Vougeot and Échezeaux.

Terroir expression: Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, Gevrey-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Vougeot, Échezeaux, Pinot Noir, limestone, freshness and tension.

David Duband signature: organic farming, whole clusters, indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction, vibrant fruit, silky texture, fine spices and great clarity of climat expression.

Organic viticulture and a natural approach

David Duband gradually moved towards a more respectful form of viticulture from the late 1990s onward. Herbicides were abandoned, soils were worked, and vineyard management evolved towards a certified organic approach, often associated with Ecocert according to professional sources.

The domaine favours ploughing, observation of natural balances, precise ripeness and careful grape selection. The aim is to preserve soil vitality and fruit energy while avoiding excessive concentration or oak influence. This philosophy gives rise to expressive, fresh and immediately recognisable wines.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: red cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, redcurrant, fresh blackberry and delicate black fruits.

Whole clusters and spices: peony, violet, rose, fine pepper, bramble, black tea, light liquorice, sweet spices and a noble vegetal touch.

Evolution and terroir: forest floor, fresh earth, graphite, wet stone, discreet smoke, silky tannins and saline finish.

Overall impression: luminous, perfumed and energetic Pinot Noirs, combining crunchy fruit, mineral tension, tactile suppleness and spicy energy.

Vinification: whole clusters, gentleness and precision

The current David Duband style is strongly marked by the use of whole clusters. Depending on the cuvée and vintage, proportions can be significant, often cited around 40 to 80%, adapted according to stem ripeness and the character sought in the wine.

Harvest: manual, with careful sorting and ripeness sought without excess.

Fermentations: indigenous yeasts, gentle macerations and gradual infusion rather than heavy extraction.

Whole clusters: variable proportion according to cuvée and vintage, generally high in the domaine’s modern style.

Ageing: oak barrels with a measured proportion of new oak, often around 30 to 40% for certain cuvées, in order to preserve fruit and energy.

Philosophy: seek fruit brightness, tannic finesse, freshness and climat identity rather than massive extraction.

Wine style

The wines of David Duband stand out for their perfume, energy and texture. Whole clusters bring floral, spicy and airy dimensions, while gentle extractions preserve tannic finesse. The wines often show attractive accessibility in youth, while gaining depth after a few years of cellaring.

From the Hautes-Côtes to the Grand Crus, the domaine seeks to maintain a clear line: clean fruit, freshness, tension, silky texture and readability of place. Village cuvées seduce through their brightness and drinkability; premiers crus and grands crus gain in structure, complexity and ageing potential.

Emblematic cuvées and climats

Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru: a fresher, more mineral and taut expression, with very precise limestone energy.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru: a structured, spicy and profound wine from a Morey-Saint-Denis terroir renowned for its noble power.

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru: a dense and classical interpretation, combining structure, black fruits, spice and ageing potential.

Échezeaux Grand Cru: a more suave and perfumed cuvée, combining red fruits, spice, depth and sensuality.

A modern figure of the Côte de Nuits

David Duband belongs to the generation of winegrowers who helped renew the face of contemporary Burgundy. His confident use of whole clusters, search for freshness and more natural approach have given the wines a highly recognisable identity, both modern and deeply Burgundian.

This signature does not erase the terroirs: it brings them to light in a vivid, floral and energetic interpretation. Enthusiasts now seek David Duband’s wines for their immediate aromatic appeal, silky texture and ability to bring together tradition, precision and freedom.
