Château Pontet-Canet — Biodynamic Alliance, Powerful Elegance and Gravel-Borne Expression
Classified as a Fifth Growth (1855), Château Pontet-Canet is a Pauillac flagship renowned for intensely structured wines of remarkable purity. Owned by the Tesseron family since 1975, the estate pioneered large-scale biodynamics in the Médoc. Guided by Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme, Pontet-Canet now embodies a singular vision balancing natural power and finely tuned finesse.
An Exceptional Terroir
A contiguous 81-hectare vineyard set on deep Gunzian gravels over compact limestone. Nearly 100 parcels split between a Cabernet-dominant area around the château and a Merlot-leaning swath near the Garonne. High vine density (≈ 9,500 vines/ha) and average vine age of 35–45 years yield naturally concentrated fruit while preserving soil balance.
Classical, Precise Varietal Mix
62% Cabernet Sauvignon • 32% Merlot • 4% Cabernet Franc • 2% Petit Verdot
A refined structure, vibrant depth and notable ageing potential — hallmarks of great Médoc terroirs.
Committed Viticulture
- First Médoc Growth certified organic then biodynamic
- All vineyard work by hand; uncompromising respect for soil life
- Hand harvesting only
- No systematic filtration
- Decisions driven by observation and intuition over technology
An artisanal, living approach that delivers authentic expression and uncommon energy.
Balanced Winemaking & Ageing
Micro-lot vinifications in concrete and stainless steel, no pumping, long macerations (3–4 weeks). 16–20 months maturation across a mix of 50–60% new barrels, amphorae and large foudres. The goal: polish the tannic frame, preserve crystalline fruit purity and highlight the terroir’s mineral tension.
Style & Reference Wines
- Château Pontet-Canet — Very deep colour; complex nose (black fruit, spice, graphite, menthol, truffle). Powerful, saline palate with chiselled tannins and vibrant length. A superb cellar wine (25–40 years), often dubbed a “Super Fifth”.
- Les Hauts de Pontet — The second wine, marrying elegance, freshness and approachability; a refined expression of the Pontet-Canet style for earlier drinking.
