Elvio Cogno Estate – Novello, Barolo

The purest expression of Nebbiolo on the Ravera cru, at the heart of the Langhe. Perched on the hills of Novello, southwest of Barolo, the Elvio Cogno Estate stands today among the finest interpreters of the Ravera cru, one of Piedmont’s most iconic sites. Founded in the 1990s by the visionary Elvio Cogno, the estate is now led with precision and sensitivity by his daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore, with a guiding philosophy: to reveal the soul of Novello’s limestone soils while working in harmony with the natural cycle of life.

Estate Overview

With approximately 15 hectares under vine, the estate upholds the heritage of high-altitude Barolo: patient aging in large Slavonian botti, parcel-specific vinification, and a subtle, aromatic interpretation of Nebbiolo, the region’s sovereign grape.

A High-Altitude Terroir with Strong Identity

  • Altitude: ≈ 380 m
  • Soils: clay-limestone marls rich in iron
  • Exposure: south / southeast
  • Climate: cool, airy, ideal for slow Nebbiolo ripening

Barolos from Ravera are renowned for their mineral tension, polished tannins, and saline depth—hallmarks of great age-worthy wines.

Viticulture & Winemaking

The estate balances tradition and modern precision:

  • Hand harvesting in successive passes
  • Long macerations (up to 30 days)
  • Gentle, controlled pump-overs
  • 24–36 months of aging in large Slavonian botti (25–30 hl)
  • Parcel-based vinifications
  • No systematic filtration

The result: vibrant, vertical wines with pure, unfiltered typicity.

Wine Style

Elvio Cogno’s Barolos embody the essence of Nebbiolo:

  • Nose: black cherry, violet, orange zest, fine spices, licorice
  • Palate: precision-driven tannins, mineral tension, refined depth
  • Finish: lengthy, poised, supported by noble acidity

Built to age: 10 to 30 years depending on the vintage.

Signature Wines

  • Barolo Ravera – Pure, crystalline expression; tension and verticality.
  • Barolo Ravera “Bricco Pernice” – Structured cru, broader tannins.
  • Barolo Riserva “Vigna Elena” – Nebbiolo Rosé clone; 36 months in botte; ultimate elegance.
  • Barolo Cascina Nuova – From younger vines: red fruit, approachability, freshness.
  • Langhe Nascetta “Anas-Cëtta” – Indigenous white: vibrant, floral, saline.

  • Reference family estate in the Langhe
  • Sought-after wines by collectors and fine restaurants
  • Precise, elegant style with masterful polish
