Domaine Roger Sabon – Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Family tradition, terroir purity & southern nobility

Founded in 1952 in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Roger Sabon is one of the historic estates that helped shape the identity of the Southern Rhône. Now run by Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon, the domaine embodies an artisanal vision built on consistency, precision and a profound respect for the land.

Discreet, respected and entirely authentic, the domaine crafts some of the deepest and most refined wines of the appellation, supported by an exceptional mosaic of terroirs and a winemaking philosophy that prioritizes finesse over showmanship.

Terroirs & Geology — The foundation of the Sabon style

The vineyard extends across 17 hectares on some of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most emblematic soils:

  • Rolled pebbles on red clay — heat retention, density, noble power.
  • Safres (compressed sands) — finesse, lifted perfume, airy texture.
  • Fractured limestone — tension, mineral energy, structural precision.
  • Light sands — elegance, verticality, delicate tannins.

Old vines (50 to 100 years) form the qualitative backbone of the domaine, bringing depth, complexity and exceptional parcel definition.

Varieties planted:
Reds — Grenache dominant, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise.
Whites (rare) — Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Bourboulenc.

Philosophy & Practices — Precision, patience, integrity

The Sabon signature is defined by a deeply artisanal approach:

  • hand harvesting with strict sorting;
  • zero herbicides, full respect for biodiversity;
  • soil cultivation to encourage aeration and deep rooting;
  • parcel-by-parcel vinification for maximum aromatic clarity;
  • gentle extraction with refined, ripe tannins;
  • fermentations in concrete or stainless steel depending on the parcel;
  • aging in foudres, demi-muids and seasoned barrels — never overtly oaky.

The objective is constant: wines that are sincere, deep and expressive, where the terroir speaks with absolute clarity.

Wine Style — Southern Rhône nobility & natural depth

Wines from Domaine Roger Sabon are recognised for:

  • controlled power, never excessive;
  • a silky, enveloping texture;
  • complex aromatics — black fruits, garrigue, sweet spices, thyme, smoky notes;
  • ripe, chiselled, elegant tannins;
  • a subtle saline, mineral finish;
  • cellaring potential of 10 to 25 years.
