Marchesi Antinori — Six Centuries of Italian Excellence and Innovation
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest, most prestigious and most influential wine families. Its documented history dates back to 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri, the Florentine guild of winemakers. For more than six centuries, the Antinori family has embodied Tuscan excellence, combining family continuity, a deep sense of terroir and a rare ability to innovate without abandoning its roots.
Under the modern impulse of Piero Antinori, followed by the current generation led by Albiera Antinori together with her sisters Allegra and Alessia, the house has profoundly shaped the history of Italian wine. Its iconic cuvées — Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso — are among the great wines that redefined Tuscany’s place on the international stage.
A historic house that has never stood still, capable of bringing together Tuscan tradition, international grape varieties, winemaking precision and a modern reading of terroir. Antinori has created wines that are distinctive, elegant, profound and universally recognised.
Terroirs: from Chianti Classico to Bolgheri
The Antinori universe rests on several major Tuscan terroirs. In Chianti Classico, the limestone and marl hills of Tenuta Tignanello give rise to wines of depth, elegance and tension, driven by Sangiovese yet enriched by the presence of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
In Bolgheri, Tenuta Guado al Tasso expresses another side of Tuscany: a luminous coastal terroir, ventilated by breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea, where Bordeaux varieties achieve full ripeness while preserving freshness, aromatic precision and noble structure.
Terroir expression: Tuscany, Chianti Classico, Bolgheri, limestone soils, galestro, alberese, clay, maritime influence, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.
Antinori signature: innovation, precision, elegance, depth, noble structure, ripe fruit, Mediterranean freshness and great ageing potential.
Tignanello: the turning point of the Super Tuscans
Tignanello is one of the wines that changed the destiny of Italian wine. Produced at Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico, it is recognised as a historic milestone: the first Sangiovese aged in barriques, the first contemporary red from the area to include non-traditional varieties — notably Cabernet — and one of the first Chianti Classico red wines made without white grapes.
Made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Tignanello combines the floral, lively energy of Sangiovese with the depth, structure and cassis notes of Cabernet. The result is a wine of great class, dense yet vibrant, modern yet deeply Tuscan.
Tignanello: black cherry, morello cherry, plum, cassis, violet, blond tobacco, sweet spices, fine leather and limestone freshness.
Solaia: blackberry, cassis, blueberry, graphite, cedar, liquorice, pepper, dark chocolate, tobacco and balsamic depth.
Guado al Tasso: ripe black fruits, cherry, mint, Mediterranean herbs, spices, mocha, graphite and maritime freshness.
Overall impression: great Tuscan wines of stature, combining ripeness, precision, structure, elegance and longevity.
Solaia: the solar power of Tenuta Tignanello
Solaia was first produced in 1978 from a parcel at Tenuta Tignanello ideally exposed to the south-west. The vineyard lies on alberese and galestro soils at relatively high altitude, allowing slow ripening, great concentration and remarkable freshness.
Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a share of Sangiovese, Solaia represents Antinori’s broadest, deepest and most internationally styled expression. It is produced only when conditions allow the desired balance to be achieved, in a powerful, refined and extremely long finish.
Guado al Tasso: Bolgheri’s coastal grandeur
Produced since 1990, Guado al Tasso is one of Bolgheri’s great expressions. It comes from alluvial soils combining clay, sand, silt and stony deposits, in a natural amphitheatre open to the sea. This setting favours full ripeness of Bordeaux varieties while preserving freshness and remarkable aromatic complexity.
The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and sometimes a small proportion of Petit Verdot. Guado al Tasso stands out for its depth, velvety texture, Mediterranean dimension and balance between solar power and maritime freshness.
Vinification and ageing
Antinori pays extreme attention to parcel selection, the ripeness of each grape variety and ageing. Lots are vinified separately in order to preserve the identity of each terroir and build precise, balanced and age-worthy blends.
Tignanello: predominantly Sangiovese, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, aged in barriques to preserve structure, finesse and complexity.
Solaia: Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, with vinification and ageing adapted to the power of the vintage.
Guado al Tasso: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and sometimes Petit Verdot, with a blend built around Bolgheri’s depth.
Philosophy: combine technical innovation, precision blending, Tuscan elegance and ageing potential.
Vintages and ageing potential
Antinori’s great cuvées are sought after for their consistency and ability to age. The 1985, 1997, 2009 and 2010 vintages are among the years often cited by collectors for their balance, concentration and longevity.
More recent vintages such as 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2021 also confirm the contemporary precision of the house. Depending on the cuvée and vintage, Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso can evolve for two to three decades, sometimes longer in the greatest years.
Heritage and influence
Marchesi Antinori has profoundly transformed the image of Italian wine internationally. With Tignanello, the house paved the way for the Super Tuscans; with Solaia, it demonstrated Tuscany’s capacity to produce great Cabernet-based wines; with Guado al Tasso, it accompanied Bolgheri’s rise among the world’s major terroirs.
More than a historic house, Antinori remains a driving force for innovation and excellence. Its influence rests on a strong conviction: tradition and modernity are not opposed, but reinforce one another when placed at the service of terroir, time and balance.
