Tenuta di Trinoro — Andrea Franchetti’s Bordeaux vision in Tuscany

Located in a secluded part of the Val d’Orcia, near Sarteano, Tenuta di Trinoro is one of Tuscany’s most distinctive estates. Created by Andrea Franchetti, the property built its reputation on a bold idea: to plant and elevate Bordeaux grape varieties in a wild valley between Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio.

Far from the classical models of Chianti or Montalcino, Tenuta di Trinoro works mainly with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The wines are produced in limited quantities and prized for their intensity, concentration and ability to combine Tuscan ripeness, tannic depth and high-altitude freshness.

The spirit of the estate

Tenuta di Trinoro embodies a free, intense and deeply personal vision of Tuscany. The wines do not seek regional convention, but a radical expression of place: dark fruit, density, salinity, ripeness, tension and tannic architecture, in a rare and immediately recognisable style.

History: Andrea Franchetti’s intuition

Andrea Franchetti discovered this remote valley and saw in it a unique potential for red wines of great depth. Rather than following traditional Tuscan grape varieties, he chose Bordeaux varieties and gradually built an estate apart, based on observation, parcel selection and an uncompromising ambition for quality.

After his passing, the spirit of the estate remains closely tied to that founding vision: producing powerful yet precise wines from demanding parcels, able to express the wild singularity of Trinoro rather than a predetermined model.

Terroir: Val d’Orcia, altitude and isolation

The estate lies in south-eastern Tuscany, in a landscape of hills, woods and preserved valleys. Altitude, strong diurnal range and varied soils allow the grapes to reach deep ripeness while retaining essential freshness. Cabernet Franc finds a particularly intense expression here: ripe, spicy, saline and highly distinctive.

Expression of place: Tuscany, Val d’Orcia, Sarteano, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, altitude, dark fruit, spice, salinity and depth.

Trinoro signature: rare, dense and architectural reds, shaped by ripe fruit, altitude freshness and a strong parcel identity.

Viticulture and winemaking: selection and intensity

The estate’s philosophy is based on severe grape selection, a precise reading of each parcel and vinifications adapted to the substance of each vintage. Élevage is designed to accompany the natural density of the wines, refining texture while preserving tension. The result is a range of deep, long and often impressive cuvées, both in youth and with bottle age.

Style of the wines

Tenuta di Trinoro wines are marked by concentration, generous texture and intense aromatics. They evoke blackcurrant, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, violet, tobacco, cocoa, graphite, warm spice and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is deep, structured and often powerful in youth, yet supported by salinity and energy that give the finest cuvées serious ageing potential.

Emblematic cuvées

Tenuta di Trinoro: the estate’s grand vin, dominated depending on the vintage by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, deep, dense and built for cellaring.

Le Cupole: the estate’s second wine, more accessible, fruit-driven and velvety, offering a fine introduction to the Trinoro style.

Palazzi: a rare Merlot cuvée, powerful, sun-filled and firmly structured.

Campo di Tenaglia: a single-parcel Cabernet Franc, intense, rich and highly expressive.

Campo di Camagi and other parcel wines: distinct expressions of Cabernet Franc, revealing differences in ripeness, texture and freshness from each site.

Cellaring and food pairings

The finest Tenuta di Trinoro cuvées can evolve for 15 to 30 years, depending on the vintage. They pair beautifully with rib of beef, roast lamb, game, duck, truffle-led dishes, reduced sauces, characterful Tuscan cuisine and mature cheeses.
