Domaine Leflaive — The quintessence of Chardonnay in Puligny-Montrachet

A true icon of the Côte de Beaune, Domaine Leflaive is one of the world’s great references for Chardonnay. Based in Puligny-Montrachet, the domaine reveals the nobility of limestone soils with rare clarity, from village wines to some of Burgundy’s most coveted Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards.

Shaped by the visionary work of Anne-Claude Leflaive, a pioneer of biodynamics in Burgundy, and continued under the direction of Brice de La Morandière, the estate has built an instantly recognisable identity: pure, taut and luminous wines of remarkable mineral depth and exceptional ageing capacity.

The spirit of the domaine

Domaine Leflaive embodies white Burgundy built on precision, light and patience. Chardonnay gains verticality, chalky texture and saline depth, with a reading of terroir that favours balance, purity and length over demonstration.

History: an absolute reference in Puligny-Montrachet

The Leflaive family’s roots in Puligny-Montrachet go back to the early 18th century, while the modern domaine took shape during the 20th century. Under Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate became one of the strongest symbols of biodynamic viticulture applied to great white Burgundy.

Today, Brice de La Morandière continues this demanding approach with close attention to the climats, soil vitality and long-term expression. Domaine Leflaive remains one of Puligny’s most admired names, both for the consistency of its wines and their ability to reveal the finest nuances of each parcel.

Terroir: the great climats of Puligny

The domaine farms around 24 hectares, mainly in Puligny-Montrachet, with an exceptional heritage of Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Limestone soils, fine exposures and the diversity of climats give wines that are straight, saline and deep, expressing both Puligny’s tension and the contained power of the grands crus.

Expression of place: Puligny-Montrachet, Chardonnay, limestone, Premier Cru, Grand Cru, saline tension, white flowers, citrus, hazelnut, flint and a long mineral finish.

Leflaive signature: crystalline, deep and chiselled biodynamic whites, shaped by pure fruit, limestone precision and outstanding ageing potential.

Viticulture and winemaking: biodynamics, precision and restraint

Domaine Leflaive works its vineyards biodynamically, with meticulous attention to soils, natural cycles and the balance of each parcel. In the cellar, vinification respects the identity of each climat: gentle pressing, natural fermentations, long élevage and measured oak use. The aim is transparency of place, textural finesse and stability over time.

Style of the wines

Domaine Leflaive wines are defined by brightness, tension and great aromatic clarity. They evoke lemon, white fruit, white flowers, fresh hazelnut, wet stone, chalk, fine butter and, at times, a noble reductive note. On the palate, the texture remains dense yet luminous, carried by saline energy and an intensely mineral finish.

Emblematic cuvées

Puligny-Montrachet: a pure, floral and saline village wine, already marked by the domaine’s precision.

Clavoillon Premier Cru: structured and luminous, combining citrus tension, fine texture and a long chalky finish.

Les Folatières Premier Cru: broader and more perfumed, carried by white fruit, flowers and Puligny minerality.

Les Pucelles Premier Cru: one of the estate’s major cuvées, refined, deep and close to Grand Cru stature in its balance.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: a wine of density and contained power, broad in texture and long on the finish.

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru: more floral and delicate, combining grace, tension and salinity.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru: a summit of verticality, limestone energy and length, built for very long cellaring.

Montrachet Grand Cru: an exceptionally rare and majestic cuvée, monumental in depth, power and mineral brilliance.

Cellaring and food pairings

The great wines of Domaine Leflaive can age for 10 to 25 years, and longer for the Grands Crus in outstanding vintages. They pair beautifully with noble fish, lobster, scallops, poultry in cream sauce, risotto, morels, mature cheeses and haute cuisine built around texture and precision.
