Château Rieussec – The Liquid Gold of Sauternes

Premier Cru Classé since 1855, Château Rieussec is one of the historic jewels of Sauternes. Nestled in the heart of this legendary appellation, it embodies sophisticated opulence, perfectly balanced finesse and a legendary aromatic depth. Under the guidance of Françoise de Lencquesaing and the technical supervision of Pierre Lurton, the estate continues its quest for excellence, blending tradition, precision and innovation.

An exceptional terroir

The vineyard spans 75 to 80 hectares of sandy-gravelly slopes rich in quartz and flint. The ideal exposure and regular morning mists foster the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), essential for crafting great Sauternes sweet wines.

The grape composition is classic yet remarkably precise:

  • 90% Sémillon — structure, richness, silkiness
  • 7% Sauvignon Blanc — tension and freshness
  • 3% Muscadelle — floral aromatics and complexity

Planting density: 7,500 vines/ha — Average vine age: 25 years.

Viticulture & harvest

  • Multiple successive hand-pickings, selecting only perfectly botrytized berries
  • Intentionally low yields to maximize concentration
  • Meticulous parcel work and green harvest to ensure consistency vintage after vintage

Vinification & ageing

Fermentation takes place in old barrels or large oak vats at carefully controlled temperatures to preserve the aromatic purity of the fruit. Ageing lasts 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels (around 60% new), sometimes complemented by a short period in stainless steel to retain freshness. Final blends are crafted with precision to express both the terroir and the vintage.

Style & signature cuvées

Château Rieussec – Grand Vin:

  • Colour: deep and luminous golden hue
  • Nose: acacia honey, candied apricot, orange zest, saffron, subtle smoky notes
  • Palate: silky and rich texture, masterful balance between sweetness and saline acidity, long finish with sweet spice and dried fruit
  • Ageing potential: 15 to 40 years depending on vintage

R de Rieussec – Second wine:

A fresh, elegant dry white that offers a modern interpretation of Sauternes terroir, with pure aromatics and mineral tension.
