Château Gruaud Larose — The refined depth of Saint-Julien

Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Château Gruaud Larose is one of the most emblematic historic estates of Saint-Julien. Its famous motto, “The wine of kings, the king of wines”, reflects the ambition of an estate long associated with the great age-worthy wines of the Médoc.

Founded in the 18th century, the château has been shaped by several important families, notably the Cordier family, before being acquired in 1997 by the Merlaut family, through Groupe Taillan. Today, Gruaud Larose is enjoying a strong qualitative momentum, with more precise vineyard work, refined vinifications and a purer expression of its great gravel terroir.

A great single-block terroir

The vineyard of Château Gruaud Larose covers around 82 hectares grouped around the château, a rare configuration in the Médoc. Located on one of the fine Garonne gravel plateaus of Saint-Julien, it benefits from naturally draining, deep and poor soils, ideal for long-lasting vine root systems.

This unity of terroir gives the wine its signature: firm structure, remarkable fruit depth and great consistency of expression. Cabernet Sauvignon plays a central role, bringing backbone, freshness, noble tannins and ageing potential.

Viticulture and winemaking

The estate works with increasing attention to parcel precision, soil balance and the adaptation of the vineyard to current climatic conditions. Harvesting is carried out with care, selecting grapes capable of expressing both the ripeness of the vintage and the natural freshness of Saint-Julien.

In the cellar, vinifications are conducted parcel by parcel, with a clear focus on precision in extraction. Ageing in French oak barrels supports the structure of the wine without dominating the fruit. The current style has gained in definition, textural finesse and aromatic purity, while preserving the historic depth of Gruaud Larose.

Wine style

Château Gruaud Larose produces powerful, deep and structured Saint-Julien wines, always carried by a noble grain of tannin. The bouquet often evokes blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, blond tobacco, sweet spices, graphite and fine forest-floor notes with age.

On the palate, the best vintages combine density, length and freshness, with firm yet refined tannins. These are wines built for cellaring, capable of evolving over several decades towards notes of fine leather, Havana tobacco, truffle, cigar box, evolved dark fruit and noble spices.

The wines of the château

Château Gruaud Larose — The estate’s grand vin, produced from the finest parcels and most accomplished lots. A deep, structured and complex Saint-Julien, built for long ageing. Great vintages such as 2020, 2019, 2018, 2010, 2009, 2000, 1990, 1986 and 1982 fully illustrate its potential.

Sarget de Gruaud Larose — The château’s second wine, more accessible in its youth, offering a supple, fruit-driven and elegant expression of the Gruaud Larose style. It is a fine introduction to the estate’s universe.

Ageing potential and food pairings

The grand vin of Château Gruaud Larose can age for 15 to 40 years depending on the vintage, and sometimes longer in great years and perfectly stored bottles. Its Médoc structure, deep fruit and tannic frame make it particularly sought after by lovers of mature Bordeaux.

At the table, it pairs beautifully with rib of beef, rack of lamb, grilled entrecôte, game, roast duck, slow-cooked dishes, mushrooms, truffle, aged cheeses and classic Bordeaux cuisine. Mature vintages are especially well suited to more delicate textures, such as veal with morels or roast poultry.
