Michele Chiarlo — Great Piedmont crus shaped by tradition, balance and refinement

Founded in 1956, Michele Chiarlo is one of Piedmont’s established names. From the outset, the estate has sought to express the region’s finest vineyard sites through its emblematic grape varieties: Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese and Moscato. Its identity rests on a clear vision: to respect Piedmontese tradition while producing wines of purity, balance and consistency.

Still family-owned, the house draws on an exceptional collection of crus across the Langhe, Monferrato, Nizza and Gavi. Names such as Cerequio, Cannubi, Asili, Faset and La Court reflect the estate’s deep attachment to site expression. Michele Chiarlo produces age-worthy Barolo, refined Barbaresco, deep Barbera and fresh, elegant white wines from Gavi.

The spirit of the estate

Michele Chiarlo offers a polished and faithful reading of Piedmont. The wines are clear, balanced and expressive, shaped without excessive extraction or unnecessary artifice. The house favours regional varieties, pure fruit, finely handled tannins and a measured interpretation of each vineyard landscape.

History: a family estate rooted in Piedmont

Michele Chiarlo founded the estate in 1956 with the ambition of producing Piedmontese wines true to their origins. From the early years, he focused on the region’s great crus and understood the importance of a parcel-by-parcel approach, particularly for Nebbiolo in Barolo and Barbaresco, and for Barbera in the Nizza area.

Over time, the estate developed around vineyards in some of Piedmont’s most respected sites. This vision, centred on crus and regional grape varieties, helped Michele Chiarlo become a recognised ambassador for fine Piedmontese wine internationally.

Today, the family continues this work with close attention to sustainability, careful vinification and the preservation of the viticultural landscape. Between the Langhe and Monferrato, Michele Chiarlo remains deeply anchored in regional tradition while offering wines of immediate clarity and long-term interest.

Terroir: Barolo, Barbaresco, Nizza and Gavi

The estate works across several of Piedmont’s key winegrowing areas. In Barolo, Michele Chiarlo is associated with prestigious crus such as Cerequio and Cannubi, two historic sites that give Nebbiolo depth, perfume, structure and serious ageing potential.

In Barbaresco, the Asili and Faset crus offer a more floral, graceful and refined expression of Nebbiolo. In Nizza, the estate highlights Barbera through La Court, one of its flagship wines, known for its depth, texture and capacity to evolve.

In Gavi, Cortese brings another dimension to the range, producing fresh, finely drawn white wines marked by citrus fruit, white flowers and a clean mineral line. This diversity gives Michele Chiarlo a broad but coherent identity, always centred on Piedmont.

Expression of place: Barolo, Barbaresco, Nizza, Gavi, Langhe, Monferrato, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Cortese, Moscato, Cerequio, Cannubi, Asili, Faset and La Court.

Viticulture and winemaking: regional grapes and parcel expression

Michele Chiarlo works with particular care for Piedmont’s traditional varieties and most distinctive crus. Each area is treated according to its own character: Nebbiolo in the Langhe, Barbera in Nizza, Cortese in Gavi and Moscato in its most suitable sites.

In the cellar, vinification is designed to preserve the natural balance of the grapes and the personality of each parcel. For the great reds, extraction remains measured, allowing tannins, fruit and structure to develop without heaviness. Maturation is adapted to each cuvée, with clarity and harmony preferred to overt oak influence.

The result is a range of classically styled wines, often approachable in youth for certain cuvées, yet capable of long evolution in the finest Barolo, Barbaresco and Nizza Riserva bottlings.

Style of the wines

Michele Chiarlo’s Barolo wines offer an elegant expression of Nebbiolo, with notes of cherry, dried rose, violet, liquorice, tobacco, sweet spice and, with time, truffle and balsamic nuances. The structure is serious, but the tannins remain finely controlled, giving the wines balance and length.

The Barbaresco wines are often more floral and immediately graceful, while the Barbera from Nizza brings darker fruit, generous texture and lively acidity. The Gavi wines favour freshness, purity, citrus notes, white flowers and a crisp, clean finish.

In top vintages, the cru bottlings gain complexity over many years, developing notes of fine leather, undergrowth, truffle, noble tar, softened red fruit and spice.

Emblematic cuvées

Barolo Cerequio: one of the house’s flagship crus. A deep, structured and refined wine, shaped by the nobility of Nebbiolo and excellent ageing potential.

Barolo Cannubi: a cuvée from one of Barolo’s most celebrated crus, combining perfume, poise, fine tannins and gradual complexity.

Barolo Tortoniano: a traditional and accessible expression of Barolo, centred on red fruit, spice, balance and firm structure.

Barbaresco Asili and Barbaresco Faset: two refined interpretations of Nebbiolo in Barbaresco, combining floral notes, red fruit, depth and poise.

Nizza La Court: a major Barbera cuvée from the La Court cru, deep, intense and textured, with natural freshness and excellent capacity to age.

Gavi Le Marne and Moscato d’Asti Nivole: emblematic cuvées from the fresher, more aromatic side of the estate, offering purity, fruit, delicacy and immediate pleasure.

Cellaring and food pairings

The finest Barolo and Barbaresco wines from Michele Chiarlo offer excellent ageing potential. Cru bottlings such as Cerequio, Cannubi, Asili and Faset can evolve for 10 to 25 years, sometimes longer in great vintages. The best Barbera wines from Nizza, especially La Court, also develop added complexity with time.

At the table, Barolo and Barbaresco pair beautifully with white truffle, risotto, tajarin pasta, braised meats, lamb, veal, game birds, mushrooms and aged cheeses. Barbera from Nizza works well with grilled meats, pasta with ragù, fine charcuterie and generous Piedmontese dishes. Gavi is ideal with fish, shellfish, antipasti, fresh cheeses and lighter Mediterranean cuisine.
