Château Rauzan-Gassies — The Classic Elegance of a Margaux Grand Cru Classé

Located at the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Rauzan-Gassies is one of the historic names of the Médoc. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, the château belongs to the great tradition of Margaux wines: aromatic finesse, structural balance, elegant tannins and strong ageing potential.

Owned by the Quié family since the mid-20th century, the estate continues to pursue precision and consistency, with careful work both in the vineyard and in the cellar. On its gravel and gravelly-sand soils, Rauzan-Gassies produces classically styled wines, where Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, freshness and Médoc depth, while Merlot adds roundness and charm to the blend.

The spirit of the château

A restrained, classic and refined expression of Margaux. Château Rauzan-Gassies seeks balanced wines, structured without excess, carried by the freshness of Médoc gravel, the precision of black fruit and the finesse of the tannins. The style favours elegance, measure and the ability of the wine to gain complexity with time.

History: a Second Growth at the heart of Margaux

The history of Rauzan-Gassies is part of the wider story of the great Médoc estates that emerged from the former Rauzan property. During the 18th century, the estate gradually took shape as a distinct entity, before being recognised in 1855 among the Second Growths of Margaux.

This classification reflects both the château’s long-standing reputation and the quality of its terroirs. Located in one of the noblest sectors of the appellation, Rauzan-Gassies benefits from a privileged vineyard environment, close to several major Margaux crus.

Under the guidance of the Quié family, the estate has continued to evolve, with particular attention paid to vineyard work, parcel selection and precision in vinification. The aim is to reveal a classic and clearly defined expression of Margaux, faithful to the identity of the cru.

Terroir: the deep gravel soils of Margaux

The vineyard covers around 28.5 to 30 hectares, planted on gravel and gravelly-sand soils, typical of the finest Left Bank terroirs. These poor, well-draining soils encourage deep vine rooting, slow grape ripening and fine structural definition in the wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the vineyard and forms the backbone of the Grand Vin. It brings precision, freshness, aromatic depth and ageing potential. Merlot contributes suppleness and fruit, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add floral, spicy and structural nuances.

This combination of gravel soils, Cabernet Sauvignon and Médoc climate gives Rauzan-Gassies its classic signature: elegant, well-defined wines that soften over time while retaining fine poise.

Expression of place: Margaux, deep gravel, gravelly sands, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, black fruits, violet, cedar, graphite and fine tannins.

Viticulture and vinification: parcel precision and classic ageing

Vineyard work is based on a parcel-by-parcel approach, adapted to soil type, vine age and the ripeness of each lot. Harvesting is carried out with care, selecting grapes at the right level of maturity, able to bring structure, freshness and aromatic purity.

In the cellar, vinification takes place in vats, with precise temperature control and measured extraction. The aim is not to seek power at all costs, but to preserve fruit elegance, tannin finesse and the natural balance of the cru.

The Grand Vin is aged in French oak barrels for around 14 to 18 months, with the proportion of new oak adjusted according to the vintage. Oak supports the structure and adds complexity, without masking the identity of the Margaux terroir.

Wine style

The style of Château Rauzan-Gassies combines Médoc structure with Margaux finesse. The wines express aromas of cassis, black cherry, redcurrant, blackberry, violet, cedar, blond tobacco, sweet spices and graphite.

On the palate, the structure is straight, fresh and balanced, with fine tannins, measured texture and an elegant finish. The best vintages gain complexity after several years in the cellar, developing notes of forest floor, fine leather, light truffle, cigar box and patinated black fruits.

Rauzan-Gassies is made for lovers of classic Bordeaux, who appreciate age-worthy wines with a refined profile, built on precision rather than exuberance.

Emblematic cuvées

Château Rauzan-Gassies: the estate’s Grand Vin and a Second Growth of Margaux. A structured, elegant and classic wine, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with fine ageing potential and a typical expression of Médoc gravel soils.

Gassies de Rauzan-Gassies: the château’s second wine, vinified with the same care as the Grand Vin. It offers a more immediate and approachable expression of the estate’s style, with greater suppleness, fruit and roundness.

Ageing and gastronomic pairings

The Grand Vin of Château Rauzan-Gassies offers fine ageing potential. Depending on vintage and storage conditions, it can evolve for 10 to 25 years, sometimes longer in great years. With time, its structure softens and its bouquet gains complexity.

At the table, Rauzan-Gassies pairs beautifully with rack of lamb, grilled entrecôte, beef fillet, duck breast, feathered game, mushrooms, truffle, reduced jus and mature cheeses. More evolved vintages are best served with refined dishes, soft textures and deep but non-dominant flavours.
