In Gaiole in Chianti, at the heart of Chianti Classico, Castello di Ama stands among Tuscany’s most prestigious estates. Led by Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti, the domaine reveals remarkably precise single-vineyard Sangiovese wines, alongside L’Apparita, a mythical Merlot that has become one of the icons of great Italian wine.
Castello di Ama — The Visionary Elegance of Chianti Classico
Located in Gaiole in Chianti, at the heart of winegrowing Tuscany, Castello di Ama is one of the most admired estates in Chianti Classico. Founded in the 1970s, the domaine quickly established itself through an ambitious vision: to reveal the greatness of Tuscan crus through a precise, parcel-based approach deeply rooted in terroir.
Under the guidance of Marco Pallanti, the estate’s winemaker since the early 1980s, and Lorenza Sebasti, Castello di Ama has built a unique identity, combining Sangiovese tradition, contemporary precision and a sharp sense of selection. The crus Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo embody the nobility of Chianti Classico, while L’Apparita, the great Tuscan Merlot first created in 1985, has become one of Italy’s most mythical wines.
A Tuscany of precision, altitude and depth. Castello di Ama seeks wines capable of expressing the personality of each cru, with fine structure, preserved freshness, elegant substance and remarkable ageing potential. The domaine unites the soul of Chianti Classico with a contemporary vision of great Italian wine.
History: a modern renaissance at the heart of Chianti Classico
Castello di Ama was founded in 1976, when several Roman families decided to revive an old winegrowing hamlet set on the high slopes of Gaiole in Chianti. At a time when Chianti Classico was still redefining its image, the estate chose a demanding path: prioritising terroir quality, vinification precision and the expression of its most remarkable parcels.
The arrival of Marco Pallanti in 1982 marked a decisive turning point. His technical work and deep understanding of the vineyard made Castello di Ama one of the pioneering estates in the interpretation of Tuscan crus. Together with Lorenza Sebasti, he gave the domaine a strong identity, combining agricultural rigour, oenological precision and aesthetic vision.
The creation of L’Apparita in 1985 also marked an important chapter in the estate’s history. Made from Merlot, this rare and profound wine helped place Castello di Ama among the great international names of Tuscany, alongside Italy’s finest collectible wines.
Terroir: altitude, galestro and alberese in Gaiole in Chianti
The estate covers around 75 hectares of vines, situated between 430 and 520 metres above sea level. This high-altitude position plays an essential role in the balance of the wines: it encourages slow ripening, preserves natural acidity and brings the freshness required for aromatic precision.
The soils are dominated by classic Chianti Classico formations, notably galestro and alberese. These poor, stony and well-draining soils allow Sangiovese to develop an expression that is both structured, luminous and vertical, with fine tannins, beautiful tension and great depth on the palate.
Castello di Ama is particularly renowned for its interpretation of crus such as Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo. Each parcel is vinified with precision in order to reveal the nuances of place: freshness, density, florality, spice, tannic depth or elegance of texture.
Expression of place: Gaiole in Chianti, Chianti Classico, altitude, galestro, alberese, Sangiovese, Merlot, red fruits, black cherry, violet, spices, tobacco, graphite and Tuscan freshness.
Castello di Ama signature: precise, structured, elegant and deep wines, with a strong parcel-based identity, remarkable freshness and significant ageing potential.
Viticulture and vinification: parcel selection and Tuscan precision
Castello di Ama works its vineyards with particular attention to the natural balance of the soils, vine vigour and the quality of ripeness. Yields are controlled, harvests are carried out with care and each parcel is monitored according to its own potential.
In the cellar, vinification is conducted lot by lot and parcel by parcel, in order to preserve the personality of each cru. Fermentations, extractions and ageing are adjusted according to the nature of the grapes, the variety and the desired balance. Sangiovese is handled to preserve brightness, tension and fine structure, while the Merlot of L’Apparita requires extreme precision in ripeness and ageing.
Ageing in French oak barrels brings structure, complexity and polish, without erasing fruit freshness or terroir identity. The style remains elegant, deep and controlled, with a constant search for balance between density, finesse and longevity.
Wine style
The wines of Castello di Ama combine the classical structure of Chianti Classico with great contemporary precision. The Sangiovese wines express aromas of cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, violet, dried rose, blond tobacco, sweet spices, Tuscan herbs and graphite. On the palate, elegance, freshness, fine tannins and persistence are central.
Bellavista, La Casuccia and San Lorenzo each show a distinct personality: tension and nobility for Bellavista, depth and density for La Casuccia, balance and complexity for San Lorenzo. L’Apparita stands apart through its silky texture, depth, dark fruit and exceptional length.
The best vintages age with great class, developing notes of fine leather, truffle, cedar, forest floor, black tea, patinated dark fruits and noble spices.
