Domaine de la Coulée de Serrant — Chenin Blanc in its most mythical dimension

Owned by the Joly Family, Coulée de Serrant is one of the Loire Valley’s most emblematic estates. Located in Savennières, on a historic hillside overlooking the valley, this confidential vineyard produces Chenin Blanc wines of rare personality, admired for their breadth, complexity and ability to evolve beautifully over many years.

The estate is inseparable from Nicolas Joly, a major figure in biodynamic viticulture, and Virginie Joly, who continues this family vision today. The wines of Coulée de Serrant are not made for simple immediate charm: they express a place, an energy, a texture and a depth that place them among the great age-worthy white wines of the world.

The spirit of the estate

Coulée de Serrant defends an approach deeply connected to the living world. Biodynamics is understood here as a way to reveal the identity of the soil, the vintage and Chenin Blanc itself, producing wines that are often broad, vibrant and sometimes enigmatic in youth, yet capable of gaining nobility and complexity with time.

History

The Coulée de Serrant vineyard is linked to a very ancient history, dating back to Cistercian monks in the twelfth century. Over time, this hillside became one of the most celebrated sites in Savennières. Since the 1980s, Nicolas Joly has helped bring the estate international recognition, notably through his early and uncompromising commitment to biodynamics.

Terroir

Coulée de Serrant lies on a hillside of schist, quartz and ancient rocks, with an ideal exposure for Chenin Blanc. The vineyard, around 7 hectares for the Coulée itself, benefits from steep slopes, a strong mineral identity and a microclimate suited to slow ripening. This combination gives the wines power, texture and a profound sense of origin.

Viticulture and winemaking

The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1984, with particular attention paid to vine balance and soil life. Harvesting is carried out through successive passes, allowing the grapes to be picked at full maturity. In the cellar, winemaking remains restrained and minimally interventionist, with ageing designed to highlight Chenin Blanc and the identity of the site rather than oak influence.

Wine style

The wines of the Joly Family are defined by their ample texture, mineral energy and complex aromatic expression. They may reveal quince, ripe apple, pear, fine honey, beeswax, dried flowers, gentle spices and stony notes. These are characterful white wines, best served not too cold and often more expressive after aeration.

Emblematic cuvées

The estate produces three major Chenin Blanc cuvées: Coulée de Serrant, from its monopole appellation and the estate’s deepest wine; Clos de la Bergerie, from Savennières Roche-aux-Moines, more approachable yet highly structured; and Les Vieux Clos, a more immediate, elegant and vibrant expression of Savennières.

Cellaring and food pairings

The great bottles of Coulée de Serrant offer remarkable ageing potential. They pair beautifully with fine fish in sauce, lobster, scallops, creamy poultry dishes, risottos, mushroom-based cuisine, mature goat cheeses and certain lightly spiced dishes. With age, the wines gain depth, honeyed complexity and mineral nuance.
