Red Burgundy 2005 – great age-worthy Pinot Noirs now at maturity

Burgundy • Vintage 2005 • Pinot Noir • Côte d’Or

Why 2005 Remains a Benchmark Vintage in the Côte d’Or

The 2005 vintage is one of the great modern years for red Burgundy. Despite a warm and dry growing season, 2005 retained remarkable balance thanks to steady ripening, excellent sanitary conditions and enough freshness to avoid any heaviness. The grapes, often small and concentrated, produced Pinot Noir wines of depth, structure and impressive ageing potential.

This combination explains the exceptional quality of the wines: dense fruit, ripe tannins, preserved freshness and fine aromatic definition. The best terroirs of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune produced reds built to last, with richness carried by finesse rather than by power alone.

Where does the vintage stand today?

Twenty years after the harvest, 2005 is entering a particularly interesting phase. Village appellations and several red wines from the Côte de Beaune can already offer genuine mature drinking pleasure, with notes of black cherry, ripe raspberry, peony, sweet spices, forest floor, fine leather and subtle truffle. The finest premiers crus and grands crus, especially in the Côte de Nuits, often retain a firm underlying structure and may benefit from careful aeration.
