PMG 2021 — La Terrasse d’Élise
PMG 2021 is one of the most distinctive cuvées from La Terrasse d’Élise, the small and highly personal estate run by Xavier Braujou in Aniane. Its deliberately informal name contrasts with the ambition of the wine: a rare Languedoc interpretation of Niellucciu, shaped with depth, precision and a clear search for balance.
This Corsican grape variety, closely related to Sangiovese, finds an original expression here on the stony terroirs of the Hérault. The 2021 vintage offers a red wine of character: dark-fruited, spicy and refined, with enough freshness to keep the wine lively, digestible and beautifully composed.
Terroir and vinification
PMG comes from limestone scree and rolled pebble soils in the warm yet well-ventilated surroundings of Aniane. Xavier Braujou works with low yields and a restrained hand in the cellar, seeking not extraction for its own sake, but the natural expression of fruit, texture and place.
The wine is aged for around two years in barrels, giving structure and polish without covering the identity of the grape. The result remains true to the spirit of La Terrasse d’Élise: a southern red wine with substance, yet built more on finesse, freshness and grain than on sheer power.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby-red colour, with dark reflections and good visual intensity.
Nose: expressive aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, dark cherry and ripe red fruit, followed by pepper, liquorice, dried herbs and a subtle wild note that recalls the Mediterranean character of Niellucciu.
Palate: generous yet controlled, with fine tannins, deep fruit and a welcome sense of freshness. The finish brings together black fruit, sweet spices, liquorice and a slightly stony impression that gives the wine length and definition.
A confidential cuvée by Xavier Braujou
PMG perfectly reflects the freedom and singularity of La Terrasse d’Élise: a limited-production wine, made from a grape rarely expressed in this way in the Languedoc, with an immediately recognisable personality. More serious than its name suggests, it combines depth, spice, freshness and a refined tactile quality.
Expression of the vintage
The 2021 vintage brings a fresher and more lifted expression than many sunnier Languedoc years. This natural restraint suits Niellucciu particularly well, refining the tannic frame, sharpening the fruit and giving the wine a seductive balance between Mediterranean ripeness, spicy detail and a clean, persistent finish.
In summary: a rare and deeply personal cuvée from Xavier Braujou, made from Niellucciu, combining the depth of a southern red with remarkable freshness, finesse and textural precision.
Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, veal chop, duck with mild spices, lamb tagine, confit aubergine, grilled mushrooms or Mediterranean cuisine built around olives, thyme and roasted vegetables.
