La Grange des Pères Rouge 2023 — Domaine de la Grange des Pères

La Grange des Pères Rouge 2023 belongs to the legacy of Laurent Vaillé, one of the key figures behind the qualitative rise of the Languedoc and the creator of one of southern France’s most sought-after wines. Produced in Aniane, under the IGP Pays de l’Hérault designation, this rare red combines Mediterranean depth with the poise and elegance that have made the estate so distinctive.

The 2023 vintage offers a young, dense and still-developing expression. Built around Syrah and Mourvèdre, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Counoise completing the blend, it is a wine of character and structure, yet never excessive, carried by dark fruit, spice, garrigue and a fresh, persistent finish that clearly calls for further cellaring.

Terroir

Located around Aniane, in the heart of the Hérault, Domaine de la Grange des Pères benefits from a remarkable setting, shaped by Mediterranean influences, limestone reliefs and cooler air from the foothills of the Larzac. The carefully tended soils give rise to a red wine that is both sun-kissed and deeply composed. The presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend explains its classification as IGP Pays de l’Hérault rather than under a regional appellation, a choice that has become part of the wine’s identity.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet colour, still youthful, with violet reflections reflecting the concentration of the vintage.

Nose: expressive aromas of black cherry, blackberry, cassis and fresh plum, lifted by liquorice, pepper, dried herbs, garrigue and a subtle smoky nuance.

Palate: direct and full on the attack, with ample yet controlled substance, fine-grained tannins, vibrant dark fruit, a spicy framework and a long, savoury finish still marked by the wine’s youth.

Expression of the vintage

The 2023 vintage gives La Grange des Pères a youthful, structured and highly promising profile. Dark fruit currently leads the expression, supported by spice and Mediterranean herbal notes, while the palate already shows the rare combination of power, balance and finesse that defines the estate. A few years in the cellar will allow the élevage, tannins and garrigue-inflected aromatics to become more fully integrated.

In summary: a cult Languedoc wine, rare, highly sought-after and deeply shaped by the legacy of Laurent Vaillé. The 2023 vintage stands out for its intensity, balance and cellaring potential.

Food pairings: roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged rib of beef, game birds, Provençal beef stew, roasted vegetables with gentle spices or mature hard cheeses.
