Hermitage Blanc 2021 — Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Magnum
The Hermitage Blanc 2021 from Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, presented here in magnum 1.5 L, belongs among the greatest white wines of the Northern Rhône. Made from Marsanne and Roussanne, it combines depth, texture, mineral freshness and exceptional ageing potential.
The 2021 vintage gives a more tense, saline and lifted Hermitage white than the most solar years. Pear, quince, white peach, citrus, white flowers, fresh almond, discreet honey, hazelnut, crushed stone and smoky nuances shape a broad, precise and deeply gastronomic wine.
A great white from the Hermitage hill
At Jean-Louis Chave, Hermitage Blanc comes from several great sectors of the hill, including lieux-dits renowned for bringing substance, tension and complexity. The varied soils of Hermitage — decomposed granite, clay, limestone and stony areas — give the wine its depth and mineral signature.
Marsanne brings breadth, textural richness and notes of yellow fruit, almond and honey. Roussanne completes the blend with perfume, floral finesse and aromatic lift. The magnum format adds further interest, encouraging slower, more harmonious and more complex evolution.
Tasting notes
Appearance: sustained pale gold, bright and dense, already noble in presence yet still youthful.
Nose: deep and precise, with pear, quince, white peach, ripe citrus, white flowers, fresh almond and hazelnut. With air, notes of discreet honey, wax, smoky herbs, crushed stone, gentle spice and lemon zest appear.
Palate: broad, textured and remarkably fresh, with dense substance held by fine acidity. The finish is long, saline, mineral and lightly bitter, with great persistence on citrus, almond and warm stone.

The 2021 vintage and ageing potential
In the Northern Rhône, 2021 is a cooler vintage, giving here an Hermitage white of balance, precision and tension. The wine retains the deep texture typical of Jean-Louis Chave, but with a more vertical, saline and mineral dimension.
This magnum can be cellared for many years. It can also be opened today with gradual aeration, in large glasses, to reveal its complexity without losing freshness. Serve at around 11 to 12°C.
Key points: a Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc 2021 in magnum 1.5 L, rare, profound, mineral and rated up to 97/100, from a vintage of remarkable freshness.
Food pairings: roasted lobster, turbot with beurre blanc, Bresse chicken with cream, sweetbreads, seared scallops, langoustines, poularde with morels, delicate truffle-based cuisine, aged Comté or mature cheeses.
