Hermitage Blanc 2003 — Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

This Hermitage Blanc 2003 from Domaine Jean-Louis Chave embodies a rare, broad and deeply contemplative expression of the great white wines of the Northern Rhône. Dominated by Marsanne, with a proportion of Roussanne depending on the vintage, it offers a powerful, textured and noble style, shaped by the richness of the year and the mineral depth of the Hermitage hill.

The wine unfolds notes of ripe pear, quince, apricot, yellow peach, fine honey, beeswax, almond, hazelnut, dried flowers, sweet spices, warm stone, light smoke and truffled nuances. The 2003 vintage, solar and generous, gives here a dense, broad and time-polished white Hermitage, to be appreciated for its evolved complexity, deep texture and warm persistence.

The spirit of the wine

A great white Hermitage of substance, depth and slow evolution, where the solar power of 2003 is expressed through a broad, almost tactile texture. Today, the wine favours complexity, volume and noble tertiary notes: honey, wax, ripe yellow fruits, dried fruits, warm stone, spices and white truffle.

Terroir: Hermitage, granite, light and mineral depth

The Hermitage hill gives birth to some of France’s greatest ageworthy white wines. Granite, loess and stony soils, combined with remarkable sun exposure, allow Marsanne to develop broad substance, aromatic richness and unique mineral depth. At Jean-Louis Chave, the blending of different parcels brings balance, complexity and a signature of rare nobility.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep gold with possible amber reflections depending on storage, bright and dense, typical of a mature great white Rhône wine.

Nose: profound and evolved, with ripe pear, quince, apricot, yellow peach, honey, beeswax, almond, hazelnut, dried flowers, sweet spices, warm stone, light smoke and white truffle.

Palate: broad, dense and enveloping, with generous substance, an almost oily texture and a long, spicy, mineral and lightly honeyed finish. Serve with care, around 11–12°C, without excessive chilling, in order to let its aromatic depth fully express itself.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: ripe pear, quince, apricot, yellow peach, candied yellow fruits.

Evolution: fine honey, beeswax, almond, hazelnut, dried flowers, sweet spices.

Terroir: warm stone, light smoke, truffled notes, deep minerality and persistent finish.

Expression of the 2003 vintage

The 2003 vintage, marked by exceptional heat, produced powerful, rich and very solar white wines. In a great white Hermitage, this year translates into opulent substance, advanced aromatic maturity and evolution towards notes of honey, wax, dried fruits, spices and truffle. Today, the wine speaks to lovers of mature, profound and singular Rhône whites.

In summary: a broad, mature and deeply complex Hermitage Blanc 2003 from Jean-Louis Chave, driven by the richness of the vintage, the nobility of the Hermitage hill and the historic signature of the domaine.

Food pairing: poultry in cream sauce, poularde with morels, lobster, scallops, truffle risotto, noble fish in sauce, aged Comté or gastronomic mushroom-based cuisine.
