Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques 2015 — Domaine Henri Magnien

This Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques 2015 from Domaine Henri Magnien offers a deep, satin-textured and refined expression of Pinot Noir from one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most admired and less frequently encountered Premier Cru sites. The 2015 vintage brings ripeness, breadth and fruit intensity, while preserving the noble structure and energy of the great terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

Terroir: Gevrey-Chambertin, depth and Premier Cru distinction

The Estournelles Saint-Jacques climat is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s more confidential Premier Crus, appreciated for its ability to combine the classic depth of the appellation with a finer, more floral and nuanced expression of Pinot Noir. The wine gains structure, length and aromatic complexity from this distinguished site.

The 2015 vintage, generous and sunny in Burgundy, gives a wine that is ripe, ample and savoury. The richness of red and dark fruit is supported by dynamic acidity and fine tannins, allowing the wine to retain balance, freshness and ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby with garnet reflections, brilliant, with an intensity that reflects the ripeness of the vintage.

Nose: expressive and nuanced, with ripe red cherries, morello cherry, candied peel, liquorice, fine spices and a touch of creamy oak. With aeration, notes of dark fruit, noble earth, discreet undergrowth and dried flowers may appear.

Palate: ample, satiny and savoury, with ripe fruit, dynamic acidity and fine tannins. The whole is generous, structured and elegant, with a long, spicy and persistent finish, typical of a well-sited Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru.

Expert review

92/100 — Wine Advocate

William Kelley describes the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques 2015 from Domaine Henri Magnien as a very fine success tasted blind. His review highlights aromas of ripe red cherries, candied peel, liquorice and creamy oak. The palate is ample, satiny and savoury, supported by dynamic acidity and fine tannins. He also notes that the wine seemed to be entering a closing phase, while considering it a beautiful expression of this superb and rarely encountered Premier Cru.

In summary: an ample, satiny and savoury Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru 2015 from a rare climat, combining ripe fruit, fine tannins, bright acidity and an elegant expression of Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir.

Food pairings: roast poultry, duck with cherries, beef fillet, veal with mushrooms, pigeon, morel risotto, truffle-based cuisine, mature Burgundian cheeses or delicately spiced dishes with pepper and red fruit.
