Adrien Dhondt Le Projet Les Chétillons de Haut 2020 — Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
Adrien Dhondt Le Projet Les Chétillons de Haut 2020 is a micro-production Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, one of the most prestigious sites in the Côte des Blancs. Made exclusively from Chardonnay, this rare Champagne offers an intense, chalk-driven and deeply vertical expression of a great Mesnil terroir.
Produced in only 1,984 bottles, 20 magnums and 6 jeroboams, this 2020 vintage comes from the Les Chétillons de Haut lieu-dit, situated mid-slope. Vinified in barrels, with malolactic fermentation, no fining and no filtration, then disgorged in April 2024 with a dosage of 0 g/L, it delivers a pure, dense and remarkably saline expression of Champagne Chardonnay.
Terroir
Les Chétillons de Haut lies on the upper part of the Le Mesnil-sur-Oger slope, in a sector renowned for its poor, highly draining chalk soils. This position gives Chardonnay wines of striking definition, often austere in their youth, yet capable of developing remarkable depth with time. Barrel ageing adds texture and dimension without obscuring the wine’s saline, chalk-driven line.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous pale gold, with a fine, precise and persistent mousse.
Nose: aromas of dried white flowers, ripe lemon, citrus zest, yellow apple, fresh almond and damp chalk, followed by nuances of smoke, fresh bread, fine hazelnut and a delicate toasted touch from the élevage.
Palate: pure, straight and intensely mineral on the attack. The wine is deep and almost tactile, carried by vivid acidity, delicate bubbles and a pronounced saline sensation. The finish is long, precise, perfumed and chalky, with distinguished energy and remarkable persistence.
Expert review
95/100 – Kristaps Karklins, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: a very high score for this 2020 Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The critic highlights a flamboyant cuvée from an east-facing site higher on the slope, marked by dried white flowers, sweet citrus, smoke, impressive depth, vivid acidity and a precise, perfumed finish.
Expression of the vintage
The 2020 vintage brings expressive ripeness to this cuvée, while the identity of Le Mesnil preserves a firm, saline and chalky backbone. The wine already shows depth and brightness, yet remains youthful in its balance. A few years of cellaring will allow the notes of citrus, smoke, dried fruit, fine brioche and damp chalk to integrate with greater harmony.
In summary: an extremely rare Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, rated 95/100 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Les Chétillons de Haut 2020 expresses a dense, chalk-driven and highly precise vision of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in an Extra Brut style with no perceptible dosage, deeply saline and built for ageing.
Food pairings: fine oysters, langoustines, roasted lobster, turbot with lemon butter, scallops, poultry in a light cream sauce, aged Comté, shellfish risotto or refined cuisine built around white truffle.
