Adrien Dhondt Le Projet Les Coullemets 2020 — Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
Adrien Dhondt Le Projet Les Coullemets 2020 is a micro-production Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. Made exclusively from Chardonnay, this rare Champagne expresses the chalky rigour, saline purity and vertical depth that define the greatest wines of Le Mesnil.
Produced in only 1,276 bottles, 20 magnums and 6 jeroboams, this 2020 vintage comes from old vines planted in 1957 in the Les Coullemets lieu-dit. Vinified in barrels, with malolactic fermentation, then disgorged in April 2024 with a very low dosage of 1 g/L, it offers an intense, finely chiselled and deeply mineral expression of Champagne Chardonnay.
Terroir
Les Coullemets lies in the lower part of the Le Mesnil-sur-Oger slope, on chalk-rich soils that give the wine a clear mineral signature. Le Mesnil is one of the most emblematic villages of the Côte des Blancs, renowned for Chardonnay that is linear, taut, long-lived and deeply marked by chalk. In this cuvée, barrel ageing brings texture and dimension without obscuring the wine’s saline, limestone-driven line.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous pale gold, with a fine, precise and persistent mousse.
Nose: aromas of candied lemon, citrus zest, white peach, yellow apple, white flowers and fresh almond, followed by notes of damp chalk, fresh bread, fine hazelnut and a subtle buttery touch linked to the élevage.
Palate: pure, direct and intensely mineral on the attack. The wine is dense yet perfectly controlled, with delicate bubbles, chiselled acidity and a long, saline, chalky and vibrant finish. It combines depth, precision and remarkable energy in a very Mesnil-driven style.
Expert review
95+/100 – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: a very high score for this 2020 Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. This recognition confirms the exceptional level of this micro-cuvée, driven by Chardonnay purity, the chalky depth of the Les Coullemets lieu-dit and Adrien Dhondt’s precise, highly sensitive craftsmanship.
Expression of the vintage
The 2020 vintage gives this cuvée an expression that is both ripe, precise and strongly structured. The fruit is already expressive, yet the palate remains firmly shaped by chalk and persistent salinity. Still young, this Champagne will gain further complexity with time, developing deeper nuances of candied citrus, dried fruits, fine brioche, damp chalk and noble reduction.
In summary: an extremely rare Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs, rated 95+/100 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. Les Coullemets 2020 embodies a precise, chalk-driven and deeply expressive vision of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in a taut, saline and age-worthy style.
Food pairings: fine oysters, langoustines, roasted lobster, turbot with lemon butter, scallops, poultry in a light cream sauce, aged Comté, shellfish risotto or refined cuisine built around white truffle.
