Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 — Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 from Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is one of the deepest and most structured expressions in the domaine’s range. Sourced from a small parcel located near the château, it combines the natural density of Clos de Vougeot with the textural finesse that defines Mugneret-Gibourg: cherry, black fruits, bright red fruits, liquorice, incense, exotic spices, silty earth, forest floor, crushed stone, pencil lead and rich yet precise tannins.
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is renowned for producing wines of great purity, where the depth of Pinot Noir is always accompanied by elegance and precision. Clos de Vougeot 2020 represents the broadest, most muscular and most age-worthy side of this sensitivity. The vintage brings concentration, ripeness and intensity, while the domaine’s style preserves freshness, tannic finesse and mineral length.
A Grand Cru of depth, patience and great presence. The 2020 combines a concentrated core of fruit, a serious tannic structure, taut freshness and a very noble aromatic profile: cherry, black fruits, liquorice, incense, spices, earth, forest floor and minerality. It is probably one of the most powerful wines of the domaine in this vintage, yet it remains guided by remarkable precision of grain.
Terroir: Clos de Vougeot, depth, gravel and contained power
Clos de Vougeot is one of Burgundy’s most famous Grand Crus, a historic walled vineyard in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg owns a small parcel near the château, purchased by Georges Mugneret in 1953. The domaine describes the soil as stony and gravelly, with a very low proportion of clay, allowing the roots to descend deeply.
This soil profile gives a Clos de Vougeot of structure, density and depth, but also of finesse when the vinification respects the grain of Pinot Noir. In the 2020, the terroir expresses itself through concentrated black fruit, notes of cherry, liquorice, incense, exotic spices, silty earth, crushed stone and a rich, powdery and persistent tannic frame. The freshness within this power gives the wine its balance.
Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Clos de Vougeot, stony and gravelly soil, cherry, black fruits, liquorice, incense, silty earth, crushed stone, pencil lead and mineral depth.
Mugneret-Gibourg signature: fruit purity, noble tannins, silky texture, precise ageing, contained power and balance between depth, freshness and finesse.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with ruby and purple reflections, dense, bright and still very youthful in expression. The colour reflects both the concentration of the 2020 vintage and the natural depth of Clos de Vougeot.
Nose: deep, intense and still reserved, with cherry, black fruits, bright red fruits, liquorice, incense, exotic spices, silty earth, forest floor, crushed stone and a touch of pencil lead. With aeration, nuances of violet, blackberry, fine pepper, noble oak, graphite and sweet spices can add further complexity.
Palate: full, deep and multidimensional, with a concentrated fruit core and a muscular, rich and powdery tannic structure. The wine remains taut, fresh and precise, driven by fine mineral energy. Flavours of cherry, black fruits, liquorice, spice, earth and crushed stone stretch into a very long, firm, savoury and persistent finish that will need time to soften fully.
Fruit: cherry, black fruits, blackberry, bright red fruits, dark berries, concentrated fruit.
Flowers and spices: violet, liquorice, incense, exotic spices, fine pepper, sweet spices.
Evolution and terroir: silty earth, forest floor, crushed stone, pencil lead, graphite, noble oak, powdery tannins.
Overall impression: deep, concentrated, structured and very long Grand Cru, with the power of Clos de Vougeot and the precision of Mugneret-Gibourg.
Expression of the 2020 vintage
The 2020 vintage in Burgundy produced ripe, concentrated and intense wines, while the best exposed terroirs were able to preserve fine freshness. In this Clos de Vougeot, the ripeness of the vintage translates into deep substance, dense fruit and powerful tannins, while the domaine’s signature maintains precision, purity and tension.
Today, this Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 remains a wine of patience. It already impresses through its depth and architecture, but it will require extended ageing for the tannins to integrate and for tertiary nuances to develop. With time, the black fruit should evolve towards more forest floor, truffle, melted spices, noble earth, fine leather, graphite and mineral complexity.
In summary: a deep, structured and very serious Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020, from a small parcel near the château and driven by the power of the vintage, the finesse of the domaine and great ageing capacity.
Dominant aromas: cherry, black fruits, bright red fruits, liquorice, incense, exotic spices, silty earth, forest floor, crushed stone, pencil lead, graphite and a very long tannic finish.
