Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva 2016 — Paolo Scavino, Magnum
The Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva 2016 from Paolo Scavino, presented here in magnum 1.5 L, is one of the estate’s greatest expressions. Sourced from a mythical cru in La Morra, this Barolo Riserva combines Nebbiolo’s aromatic finesse, the depth of a great terroir and the outstanding balance of the 2016 vintage.
This rare wine reveals an intense and refined profile: dried cherry, red fruit, rose, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, spice, dried fruit, liquorice and mineral notes. The magnum format adds even greater interest for long-term ageing.
The prestige of Rocche dell’Annunziata
Rocche dell’Annunziata is one of La Morra’s most prestigious crus. Paolo Scavino’s vines, located at around 380 to 385 metres in altitude, benefit from favourable exposure and limestone-rich soils with pale sands, sandstone and deep calcareous layers.
This terroir gives Barolo wines of great elegance, more floral and silky than massive, yet capable of remarkable depth. The Riserva cuvée benefits from long ageing in barrels, large casks and bottle, refining the tannins and revealing the full complexity of Nebbiolo.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet reflections, bright, dense and still very youthful in expression.
Nose: intense and complex, with dried cherry, red fruit, rose, violet, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco, liquorice and fine spice. With air, notes of dried fruit, blood orange, hazelnut, noble tar and warm stone emerge.
Palate: broad, silky and concentrated, with dense yet remarkably integrated tannins. The wine combines power, grace and precision, with a very long, floral, spicy, mineral and persistent finish.
100/100 — James Suckling
98/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Critics describe this Barolo Riserva 2016 as exceptional, dense, silky and deeply balanced. James Suckling highlights its aromatic complexity, concentration and remarkably fluid tannins, while Wine Advocate describes a memorable, compact and vibrant wine built for very long evolution.
The 2016 vintage and ageing potential
In Barolo, 2016 is regarded as one of the great recent classic vintages: slow ripening, preserved freshness, noble tannins and outstanding ageing capacity. In Rocche dell’Annunziata, this structure translates into a rare balance of concentration, finesse and energy.
This magnum is still young and ideally deserves several more years in the cellar. It can be opened with gradual aeration, in large glasses, without excessive decanting in order to preserve Nebbiolo’s floral finesse. Serve at around 16 to 17°C.
Key points: a Paolo Scavino Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata Riserva 2016 in magnum 1.5 L, rated 100/100 by James Suckling and sourced from an emblematic Grand Cru of La Morra.
Food pairings: tajarin with white truffle, agnolotti del plin, porcini risotto, brasato al Barolo, braised veal, roast pigeon, beef fillet, feathered game, aged parmesan or mature pecorino.
