Nicolas Barbou – A Singular New Voice in the Loire Valley

A young vigneron redefining the identity of Touraine whites with Burgundian precision and artisanal intent.

A Rising Signature in Touraine

A talented new voice in contemporary Touraine, Nicolas Barbou has quickly emerged as one of the region’s most captivating young winemakers. Descendant of the respected Domaine des Corbillières, he launched his own project in 2020 with a clear ambition: to reveal the purity and depth of carefully selected terroirs through a patient, precise and artisanal approach.

Trained in Burgundy with experiences at Boisson Vadot in Meursault and Jean-Yves Bizot in Vosne-Romanée, he brought to Oisly a philosophy inspired by great white wines: precision, texture, time and discipline.

Terroir & Philosophy

The vines thrive on the Oisly plateau, south of Blois, within the AOC Touraine Oisly appellation. The terroir alternates between deep sands, calcareous marl and flinty clays, imparting tension, precision and saline energy to the wines.

Poor and highly draining soils force the vines to root deeply, resulting in low yields and concentrated fruit. Manual harvests, slow fermentations and long élevage allow the wines to follow their natural rhythm, preserving their intrinsic character.

Winemaking & Style

The domaine focuses on two varieties:

  • Sauvignon blanc — the region’s flagship grape, here treated like a great Burgundy: whole-cluster pressing, natural fermentations, 18–20 months of élevage in Damy and Rousseau barrels with around 30% new oak.
  • Folle blanche — a historic Loire grape, vinified with the same rigor, resulting in a taut, crystalline expression.

Barbou’s wines are defined by density, textural elegance and a distinctive saline energy. These are gastronomic, terroir-driven wines built on depth and balance rather than exuberance.

Signature Cuvées

Utopie Créative – Touraine (Sauvignon blanc)

The domaine’s manifesto cuvée. A terroir-driven Sauvignon blanc vinified like a fine white Burgundy. Notes of white fruits and citrus zest, floral nuances, chalky tension and a long, vibrant finish.

Folie Insolente – Oisly (Folle blanche)

A rare and audacious cuvée highlighting a forgotten grape traditionally used for distillation. Pure and finely aromatic, with chiseled tension and a subtle saline finish.

Chronicle of Founding Vintages

The estate’s first three vintages already mark a striking ascent. 2020 — the debut vintage — achieved a perfect balance between richness and freshness. 2021 shows more tension and precise aromatics, while 2022 brings generous texture and a beautifully saline finish.

These foundational years have positioned Nicolas Barbou among the most closely watched micro-estates in Touraine.
