The history of Château Pavie Macquin is inseparable from Albert Macquin, an agricultural engineer and an essential figure in Saint-Émilion. At the end of the 19th century, as phylloxera devastated European vineyards, Albert Macquin played a decisive role in the spread of vines grafted onto American rootstocks, helping to rebuild the Bordeaux vineyard.
The estate bears his name in tribute to this major contribution. His descendants retained the property, while the modern management of the château took a decisive turn in 1994, when Nicolas Thienpont was appointed director. Alongside Stéphane Derenoncourt, he initiated a more precise reading of terroir and a more refined approach to vinification.
This evolution led to important recognition: Pavie Macquin was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 2006 revision of the Saint-Émilion classification, and confirmed its rank in subsequent classifications. Today, the estate is one of the most consistent and sought-after references of the appellation.
The vineyard of Château Pavie Macquin covers around 15 hectares, located on the heights of Saint-Émilion in a particularly qualitative sector of the limestone plateau and slope. The vines benefit from clay-limestone soils, sometimes very stony, which play an essential role in the freshness, tension and structure of the wines.
Limestone brings verticality, energy and a chalky sensation on the finish; clay reinforces density and depth; variations in slope, exposure and soil depth create a mosaic of ripeness levels and textures. This complexity makes it possible to obtain wines that are simultaneously fleshy, mineral and remarkably persistent.
The vineyard is dominated by Merlot, the central grape variety of Saint-Émilion, complemented by Cabernet Franc and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvest: manual picking, successive sorting and precise selection of grapes according to each parcel’s ripeness.
