Weingut Zum Sternen is one of the historic estates of Aargau. Located in Würenlingen, in the lower Aare Valley, it is run by Andreas and Manuel Meier, representatives of a long family tradition. The estate combines wine production, deep knowledge of plant material and recognised expertise in vine selection and nursery work.
This dual competence — as winegrowers and vine nursery specialists — gives the estate a distinctive identity in the Swiss wine landscape. Zum Sternen works with a broad palette of varieties, yet its wines share a clear common line: aromatic precision, harmonious acidity, balanced substance and marked character. The estate embodies a serious, technical and deeply rooted expression of Swiss wine.
A Swiss viticulture of precision, where mastery of plant material, soil knowledge and cellar discipline produce clean, structured and lasting wines. Weingut Zum Sternen seeks expressive, frank and balanced cuvées, suited to the varieties and terroirs of the lower Aare Valley.
The history of Zum Sternen is part of a remarkable family continuity. Since 1995, Andreas and Manuel Meier have run the estate and vine nursery, continuing a tradition that stretches across several generations. This historical depth gives the estate an important place in the Aargau vineyard.
The Meier vine nursery has also contributed to the family’s reputation. Knowledge of rootstocks, massal selections, grape varieties and their adaptation to soils gives the estate a fine understanding of the vineyard, far beyond simple wine production.
Today, Zum Sternen is one of the classic addresses of Aargau, with a frank, precise and carefully made style. The wines do not seek spectacular effect, but consistency, aromatic clarity and fidelity to place.
The estate’s vines are located in the lower Aare Valley, notably around Würenlingen, Döttingen and Klingnau. This part of Aargau benefits from a temperate Swiss climate, favourable exposures and varied soils that allow both white and red varieties to be cultivated.
The domaine works with parcel and varietal wines, paying particular attention to ripeness, acid balance and aromatic precision. Pinot Noir finds a structured expression here, sometimes fleshier than in other Swiss regions, while the whites retain freshness and clarity.
The name Kloster Sion appears among the estate’s important cuvées, notably for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other varieties depending on the vintage. These wines show Zum Sternen’s desire to produce identified, readable and consistent cuvées.
Terroir expression: Aargau, lower Aare Valley, Würenlingen, Döttingen, Klingnau, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling-Sylvaner, varied soils, freshness and precision.
Zum Sternen signature: clean, aromatic, structured, precise and harmonious wines, shaped by deep knowledge of plant material and local terroirs.
The estate benefits from particular expertise through its vine nursery activity. This knowledge of plant material makes it possible to adapt grape varieties to specific parcels and to understand the balance between soil, climate and ripeness with great precision.
Viticulture aims for healthy, ripe and balanced grapes, capable of producing precise wines without excess. The reds seek structure and tannin maturity; the whites favour aromatic brightness, freshness and harmonious acidity.
Pinot Noir: cherry, raspberry, red plum, sweet spices, violet, light forest floor and fine tannins.
Chardonnay: pear, yellow apple, ripe citrus, white flowers, hazelnut, fresh butter and a balanced finish.
Riesling-Sylvaner and aromatic whites: green apple, lemon, flowers, fresh herbs, white fruits and lively palate.
Overall impression: frank, precise and harmonious Swiss wines, with a clear expression of variety and place.
In the cellar, the estate seeks precise vinification adapted to each grape variety. Whites are made to preserve aromas, freshness and vivacity, while reds are aged to round the tannins and strengthen the structure.
Whites: precise vinification, clean aromas, harmonious acidity and balanced palate.
Reds: measured extraction, adapted ageing, polished tannins and frank fruit expression.
Reserve cuvées: broader substance, more structuring ageing and increased ageing potential.
Philosophy: produce reliable, expressive and precise Swiss wines, balancing technical mastery and authenticity.
The Zum Sternen style is marked by precision and consistency. The white wines are aromatic, clean and balanced, with acidity that supports freshness without dominating the substance. The reds, notably Pinot Noir, are structured, fruit-driven and sometimes more powerful than one might traditionally expect from a Swiss Pinot.
The most ambitious cuvées, especially reserve wines, gain complexity after a few years in the cellar. They develop spicier, lightly oaked or tertiary notes, while retaining a clean, precise and gastronomic style.
Kloster Sion Pinot Noir: a structured and expressive red, marked by red fruits, sweet spices and fine palate presence.
Kloster Sion Pinot Noir Réserve: a more ambitious, deeper and fleshier cuvée, with ageing that brings structure and complexity.
Kloster Sion Chardonnay Réserve: a broad, textured and precise white, combining yellow fruit, freshness, careful ageing and a persistent finish.
Riesling-Sylvaner: a fresh, aromatic and direct white, ideal for youthful and convivial drinking.
Special cuvées: depending on the vintage, the domaine also produces wines from more original varieties or blends, reflecting its varietal expertise.
The freshest whites are best enjoyed young, while Chardonnays and reserve cuvées can evolve for several years. The finest Pinot Noirs, especially in Réserve versions, gain complexity after 5 to 10 years depending on the vintage.
The whites pair well with aperitifs, fish, poultry, fresh cheeses, vegetable-based cuisine and light dishes. Pinot Noirs work beautifully with veal, roast poultry, duck, mushrooms, pork, mature cheeses and characterful Swiss or Burgundian-inspired cuisine.
