Château Le Chemin – The Rare, Crystalline Expression of the Pomerol Plateau

A Micro-Estate Crafted Like a Jewel in the Heart of the Plateau

Château Le Chemin belongs to the very exclusive circle of Pomerol micro-estates, those tiny properties where every detail matters. Founded in 1993 by the Despagne-Rapin family, the domaine took a decisive turn in 2008 when François Despagne—who also oversees the renowned Château Grand Corbin-Despagne in Saint-Émilion—assumed full technical direction.

With less than one hectare in a single contiguous parcel, located at the very heart of the historic plateau, close to L’Église-Clinet, Le Chemin is farmed with the precision of a garden. Such a minuscule scale allows for absolute control from vineyard to cellar, resulting in a wine of unique character—subtle, taut, and deeply rooted in the mineral identity of Pomerol.

An Exceptional Terroir – Fine Gravel Soils of the Pomerol Plateau

Planted on a refined mosaic of fine gravel and sandy-gravel soils with impeccable drainage, the vineyard benefits from an ideal natural environment:

  • Fine gravels: delicate texture, moderated heat, even ripening;
  • Highly permeable subsoil: deep rooting and optimal water flow;
  • Central location within Pomerol’s most prestigious cluster of crus.

The domaine grows a single grape variety, perfectly suited to its soil:

  • Merlot – 100%
    Single parcel – the purest possible expression of its origin.

This unity of raw material, combined with a crystalline terroir, creates a wine of striking precision, lift and mineral clarity.

Viticulture & Philosophy – Rigor, Observation, Precision

Vineyard work is entirely manual, carried out with a degree of care rarely seen in Pomerol. Low yields ensure natural concentration without heaviness. The domaine follows:

  • Organic, living-soil farming rooted in respect for biodiversity;
  • precise maturity monitoring, row by row;
  • manual harvesting in small crates;
  • rigorous sorting to retain only pristine berries;
  • millimetric adjustments tailored to each vintage.

This discreet yet uncompromising approach seeks to express the terroir without makeup, in a wine that is luminous, straight and vertical.

Winemaking – Purity as the Guiding Principle

Vinification is carried out in barrel, with a meticulous and delicate touch:

  • fermentation in small vessels to maximize precision;
  • gentle extractions through balanced punch-downs and pump-overs;
  • a long élevage of 18–21 months in new French oak;
  • bottling without filtration to preserve original texture.

The result is a rare equilibrium between the seductive richness of Merlot and the saline tension of Pomerol’s gravel soils.

Style – Silky Depth, Mineral Freshness, Timeless Elegance

Château Le Chemin embodies one of the most delicate, intimate expressions of Pomerol. Its hallmark traits include:

  • a deep, luminous ruby robe;
  • a nuanced nose of red and black fruits, graphite, fresh truffle and mint;
  • a satin-textured palate with finely grained tannins;
  • a mineral line of tension from fine gravel;
  • a long, straight, mouthwatering finish driven by contained energy.

The wine combines restraint, refinement and inner depth. It gains complexity with time and typically reaches its peak between 10 and 20 years after the vintage.
