Weingut Bernhard Huber — The Benchmark of German Spätburgunder

Weingut Bernhard Huber, located in Malterdingen in the Baden region of Germany, is a leading name in the world of Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). Inspired by Burgundy yet deeply rooted in its muschelkalk (shell limestone) terroir, the domaine crafts wines that are refined, precise, and profound, with a distinctive dry, tense, and mineral style.

History & Philosophy

Founded by the visionary Bernhard Huber, the domaine played a pivotal role in bringing international acclaim to German Spätburgunder. After Bernhard's passing in 2014, his son Julian Huber took over alongside his mother Barbara, continuing the family's commitment to excellence. The domaine prioritises low yields, meticulous vineyard management, and a delicate approach in the cellar. The current philosophy focuses on the pure expression of terroir — crafting dry, age-worthy wines driven by minerality and finesse.

Vineyard & Terroirs

The estate cultivates around 28–30 hectares around Malterdingen, with a majority planted to Spätburgunder (~70%), complemented by Chardonnay, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris). The soils of muschelkalk (fossil-rich limestone) — sometimes weathered (verwitterter Muschelkalk) — echo the calcareous energy of certain Côte de Nuits vineyards.

Key vineyard sites:

  • Bienenberg (Malterdingen) — structure, salinity, and length.
  • Sommerhalde (Bombach) — finesse, clarity, and precision.
  • Wildenstein — flagship site, exceptional ageing potential.
  • Schlossberg (Hecklingen) — noble calcareous character and depth.

Winemaking Methods

Depending on the vintage, the grapes are partially or fully destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak rising up to 50–70% for the top cuvées. Long fermentations and extended ageing on lees add texture and complexity. The wines are neither fined nor filtered, preserving their purity and aromatic intensity.

Signature Cuvées

  • Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs “Wildenstein” — intense, vertical, and built for long ageing.
  • Bienenberg GG — ample, structured, and powerfully mineral.
  • Sommerhalde GG — immediate charm, precision, and elegance.
  • Malterdinger Spätburgunder — an entry-level wine with notable depth and finesse.
  • Chardonnay GG — taut, energetic, and Burgundian in spirit.

Style & Recognition

The Huber style combines purity, limestone-driven tension, and aromatic precision. The Spätburgunders reveal depth, energy, and a remarkable capacity for ageing. They stand confidently alongside the finest Burgundies while displaying an unmistakable German identity, defined by muschelkalk soils and restrained extraction.

A Landmark Estate in Baden

At Malterdingen, Weingut Bernhard Huber embodies the essence of German Spätburgunder: wines with mineral elegance, depth, and longevity — clear expressions of Baden’s calcareous strength and the Huber family’s dedication.
