In Pünderich, on the steep slopes of the Mosel, Weingut Clemens Busch embodies one of the purest and most vibrant expressions of German Riesling. Led by Clemens, Rita and Johannes Busch, the domaine farms the great slate terroirs of the Marienburg biodynamically, producing crystalline, saline, deep and remarkably age-worthy wines.
Based in Pünderich, in the heart of the Mosel, Weingut Clemens Busch is one of Europe’s great references for terroir-driven Riesling. Led by Clemens, Rita and Johannes Busch, the domaine has built its reputation on a remarkably precise reading of slate soils, demanding biodynamic farming and wines of striking mineral energy.
Since the 1980s, Clemens and Rita Busch have followed a deeply artisanal path, based on respect for the living world, natural fermentations and the patient expression of the Mosel’s great slopes. The domaine is now inseparable from the Pündericher Marienburg, a vast amphitheatre of slate whose different parcels give rise to dry, off-dry and sweet Rieslings of great purity, capable of ageing gracefully for many years.
A Mosel of slate, patience and crystalline tension. Weingut Clemens Busch seeks living, precise and deep Rieslings, where each nuance of soil — blue, grey or red slate — leaves its own vibration. The style favours salinity, transparency, length and fine texture over immediate aromatic display.
The domaine is deeply rooted in Pünderich, on the banks of the Mosel. When Clemens and Rita Busch took over the family estate, they very early on directed the vineyard towards organic, then biodynamic farming, at a time when such an approach was still rare in the region.
This conviction rests on a simple idea: Riesling expresses its identity fully when the soil remains alive, when the vine roots deeply and when the wine is allowed to ferment at its own rhythm, without make-up or excessive correction. This vision has made Clemens Busch one of the most respected domaines in contemporary Mosel.
Today, with the involvement of Johannes Busch, the domaine continues along the same path: terroir precision, fidelity to Riesling, manual work on steep slopes and the search for an ever clearer expression of the Marienburg.
The domaine’s vineyard covers around twenty hectares, mainly around the Pündericher Marienburg. This great Mosel slope forms a spectacular set of steep vineyards facing the river, where Riesling finds one of its most precise fields of expression.
The domaine’s singularity lies in its detailed reading of different slate colours. Blue slate gives taut, saline and deeply mineral wines. Grey slate brings balance, finesse and harmonious length. Red slate offers more mineral warmth, structure and intensity.
The emblematic parcels of the Marienburg — Fahrlay, Falkenlay, Rothenpfad, Felsterrasse, Fahrlay Terrassen and Raffes — allow the domaine to produce highly distinct Rieslings, each marked by its subsoil, exposure and individual energy.
Expression of place: Pünderich, Mosel, Marienburg, blue slate, grey slate, red slate, Riesling, salinity, citrus fruit, white flowers, yellow fruits, wet stone and long mineral tension.
Clemens Busch signature: biodynamic Rieslings, crystalline, deep and vibrant, marked by slate purity, natural fermentations and great ageing potential.
The domaine is farmed under certified biodynamics, with demanding work on slopes that are often difficult to mechanise. The vines are tended by hand, the soils are carefully worked, and each parcel is followed according to its own balance.
Harvesting is carried out by hand, with precise grape selection. The aim is not excessive ripeness, but a fair balance between concentration, acidity, aromatic intensity and saline energy. This discipline allows the domaine to produce Rieslings that are luminous, deep and highly drinkable.
In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts, often long and slow. Ageing takes place mainly in large old casks, on lees, with little intervention. Sulphur is used with restraint, in order to preserve aromatic purity and the natural vibration of the wines.
The wines of Clemens Busch are defined by remarkable mineral energy, tactile salinity and great precision on the palate. The dry Rieslings often express notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, white peach, ripe apple, white flowers, fine herbs, wet stone, noble smoke and delicate spices.
On the palate, the style is straight, long and vibrant, with fine acidity and a texture that gains complexity with age. The finest dry wines and Grosses Gewächs can evolve for many years, developing nuances of fine wax, candied citrus, dried fruit, warm stone and lightly smoky notes.
The domaine’s Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese wines offer another reading of Riesling: more aerial, fruit-driven and sometimes delicately sweet, yet always balanced by the natural acidity and salinity of the slate terroir.
Riesling Trocken: an introductory expression of the Busch style, straight, pure and saline, with fine slate energy.
Vom Blauen Schiefer, Vom Grauen Schiefer, Vom Roten Schiefer: the domaine’s emblematic triptych, allowing the nuances of blue, grey and red slate to be read through Riesling.
Marienburg Grosses Gewächs: the great dry expression of Pündericher Marienburg, produced according to parcel and soil: Fahrlay, Falkenlay, Rothenpfad, Felsterrasse or Fahrlay Terrassen.
Marienburg Raffes: a rare cuvée from very old vines, dense, deep and meditative, with great mineral intensity.
Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese: luminous, slender and precise wines, where any sweetness remains balanced by acidity and terroir salinity.
Nonnengarten: another important Pünderich terroir, offering a fine, delicate and very elegant expression of Mosel Riesling.
The great dry Rieslings of Clemens Busch have remarkable ageing potential. The cuvées from Marienburg, particularly the Grosses Gewächs and parcel selections, can evolve for 10 to 30 years depending on vintage and storage conditions. The lightly sweet and noble sweet wines can also age with great grace.
At the table, these Rieslings pair beautifully with noble fish, shellfish, iodine-driven cuisine, sashimi, poultry, citrus-based dishes, goat cheeses and refined Asian cuisine. The more structured cuvées also work well with lobster, herb risotto, delicate pork, root vegetables, mature cheeses and lightly spiced dishes.
