History: a family estate turned Napa Valley icon

The modern story of Dalla Valle Vineyards began in 1982, when Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle founded the estate in Oakville. The first vines were planted in the mid-1980s, and the estate released its first wine with the 1986 vintage.

The creation of Maya, beginning with the 1988 vintage, marked a decisive turning point. This Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend, named after the daughter of Naoko and Gustav, quickly became one of California’s most sought-after wines.

After Gustav Dalla Valle’s passing, Naoko continued to develop the estate with an exacting, international and deeply family-driven vision. Today, Maya Dalla Valle, trained across several great wine regions of the world, brings a contemporary reading of the terroir while preserving the singular identity of the property.

Terroir: the volcanic hillsides of Oakville

The Dalla Valle vineyard occupies a remarkable position on the eastern hillsides of Oakville, one of the most prestigious sectors of Napa Valley. The vines are planted on well-exposed slopes, benefiting from generous sunlight, natural drainage and the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay.

The soils are marked by a strong volcanic component, with stony elements rich in iron and minerals. This geology naturally limits vine vigour, encourages low yields and gives the wines their tension, depth and the graphite note often associated with great Oakville Cabernet.
