Weingut von Winning – The Pinnacle of Dry Terroir-Driven Riesling in the Pfalz

A historic estate at the forefront of Germany’s Riesling renaissance

Established in 1849 in Deidesheim, Weingut von Winning holds a central place in the qualitative history of the Pfalz. Originally known as Dr. Deinhard, the estate entered a new era in the early 21st century, driven by a philosophy centred on precision, purity, and uncompromising expression of the great vineyards of Deidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg.

A proud member of the VDP, von Winning is now regarded as one of Germany’s most sought-after producers, celebrated for its dry Rieslings that are deep, textural, and intensely mineral.

Legendary Terroirs — Kirchenstück, Pechstein, Kalkofen

The estate farms more than 50 hectares across some of the Pfalz’s most revered vineyards — terroirs that rank among the greatest dry Riesling sites in the world:

  • Forst Kirchenstück GG — Complex soils of sand, limestone, basalt and yellow sandstone. Monumental structure and explosive minerality.
  • Forst Pechstein GG — Pure basalt. Verticality, volcanic tension, profound energy and extraordinary longevity.
  • Deidesheimer Kalkofen GG — Limestone sandstone and marl. Crystal-clear precision, aerial elegance, remarkable purity.

Additional top sites include Ungeheuer, Kieselberg and Langenmorgen — a geological mosaic offering some of Europe’s most nuanced expressions of mineral terroir.

Philosophy — Dry Wines, Terroir Precision, Authentic Structure

Von Winning’s identity is built around three core principles:

  • Rigorous and respectful viticulture
    Living soils, preserved biodiversity, meticulous parcel-by-parcel management, and limited yields.
  • Natural, slow vinification
    Spontaneous fermentations with indigenous yeasts, precisely managed ageing in barrels and casks — a style inspired by Burgundy.
  • A commitment to dry wines
    The estate produces exclusively “trocken” wines, prioritising structure, depth, and terroir clarity over aromatic opulence.

The result: wines of rare intensity — chiselled, textural, and built for long ageing.

Wine Style — Mineral Power, Tension & Deep Structure

Von Winning Rieslings are defined by:

  • dense, tactile minerality;
  • vibrant, precisely etched acidity;
  • a complex aromatic palette of citrus, warm stone, smoke and herbs;
  • a saline, textural mouthfeel typical of Forst and Deidesheim;
  • exceptional ageing potential — often 20 years or more.

The estate also produces some of Germany’s most ambitious Sauvignon Blancs, but its core identity remains deeply anchored in dry Riesling.
