Dunn Vineyards — California Winemaking at Its Purest

Founded in 1979 by Randy Dunn, Dunn Vineyards has become a benchmark in Napa Valley, particularly for the rugged terroir of Howell Mountain. Sitting at over 500 m of elevation on volcanic soils, the estate is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of stunning power, tightly structured in youth yet blessed with extraordinary aging potential. Today, Randy is joined by his son Mike Dunn, who maintains the original vision: integrity, terroir, and purity.

Terroir & Philosophy

  • High elevation (500+ m) above the valley floor.
  • Volcanic, rocky soils with low fertility.
  • Cool nights and slow ripening foster natural balance and depth.

Dunn has always stayed away from trends: no over-ripeness, no excessive extraction, no gloss. The estate’s signature lies in respectful winemaking that highlights the intrinsic character of mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon.

Winemaking & Aging

  • Fermentation in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts.
  • Extended aging up to 32 months in mostly neutral French oak barrels.
  • No winemaking artifices: no excessive oak, no over-extraction. The goal is to express mineral depth, tension, and site character.

The result is wines that are tight, vertical, and structured in youth, destined to unfold with aromatic precision over time.

Style of the Wines

Dunn’s style is unmistakable: a pure, dense, mineral Cabernet Sauvignon, built on firm but noble tannins and refreshing acidity. Hallmark aromas with age:

  • cassis, graphite, cedar,
  • earth, pencil lead, spices,
  • Majestic evolution over 20–30 years.

These are wines for those who seek depth and precision, more than opulence or showiness.

Key Bottlings

  • Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon — the flagship wine. Taut, structured, designed for decades of aging. A pure expression of volcanic mountain soils.
  • Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — sourced from multiple parcels, more approachable young yet still firmly built.
  • Randy’s Vineyard (rare) — a small, occasional bottling with more immediate charm.

A Napa Legend True to Its Vision

In contrast with Napa's often hedonistic reputation, Dunn Vineyards embodies a rare form of integrity: no concessions, no artifice, only the truth of the place. For nearly 50 years, the estate has earned a near-mythical status among collectors of age-worthy, mountain-grown Cabernet.
