Domaine Armand Rousseau — The Legendary Soul of Gevrey-Chambertin
Founded in 1909 in Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most revered names in Burgundy. A benchmark estate of the Côte de Nuits, it is celebrated for Pinot Noir wines of depth, precision, elegance and exceptional ageing potential.
From the early acquisition of prestigious parcels such as Charmes-Chambertin, Chambertin and Clos de la Roche, Armand Rousseau laid the foundations of a domaine that would become inseparable from the identity of Gevrey-Chambertin. A pioneer of estate bottling in the 1930s and among the first Burgundian producers to export to the United States after Prohibition, the domaine combines tradition, discretion and vision.
Domaine Armand Rousseau embodies the nobility of Pinot Noir through wines of elegance, structure and quiet power. Its style combines pure red and black fruit, floral finesse, spice, mineral tension and silky tannins, with a remarkable ability to evolve gracefully over decades.
Terroir: the great climats of Gevrey-Chambertin
The domaine works 15.33 hectares of vines, including approximately 3 hectares of Village appellations, 3.77 hectares of Premier Cru and 8.51 hectares of Grand Cru, mainly in Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis.
Its holdings include some of Burgundy’s most prestigious climats: Chambertin, Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze, Charmes-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Clos de la Roche, as well as the highly regarded Premier Crus Clos Saint-Jacques and Lavaux Saint-Jacques.
The limestone and clay-limestone soils of Gevrey-Chambertin give the wines their depth, tension and precision. Each climat expresses a distinct personality: Chambertin offers majestic power and longevity, Clos-de-Bèze brings refinement and structure, while Ruchottes-Chambertin often reveals a more mineral, vibrant and crystalline expression.
Terroir expression: Gevrey-Chambertin, limestone, clay-limestone soils, Grand Cru depth, mineral tension, red and black fruits, floral notes, spice and noble structure.
Rousseau signature: elegance, precision, silky tannins, restrained power, aromatic purity, ageing capacity and faithful expression of each climat.
Wine style
Produced exclusively from Pinot Noir, the wines of Domaine Armand Rousseau are renowned for their balance between finesse and intensity. They are never excessive or ostentatious; instead, they reveal their depth gradually through purity of fruit, floral delicacy, mineral definition and a refined tannic frame.
In youth, the wines often show bright red cherry, raspberry, black cherry, wild strawberry, violet, rose, fine spices and subtle earthy nuances. With age, they gain remarkable complexity, developing notes of forest floor, truffle, fine leather, tea leaf, game, dried flowers and noble spice, while retaining freshness and poise.
Fruit: red cherry, black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, redcurrant and dark berries.
Flowers and spices: violet, rose, peony, fine spices, sweet pepper, tea leaf and subtle liquorice.
Evolution and terroir: forest floor, truffle, noble earth, fine leather, game, dried flowers, limestone freshness and mineral persistence.
Overall impression: profound, refined and timeless Burgundy, combining aromatic purity, silky structure and exceptional ageing potential.
Viticulture and vinification
The domaine follows a precise and respectful approach in both vineyard and cellar. The soils are carefully worked, the vines are meticulously tended, and harvesting is carried out by hand. The average vine age is often cited at around 40 to 45 years, contributing depth, concentration and natural balance to the wines.
Viticulture: soil cultivation, careful debudding, manual harvest and close attention to vine balance.
Vinification: gentle extraction, controlled fermentations and a measured use of whole clusters depending on the vintage and cuvée.
Ageing: oak barrel ageing, with restrained use of new oak to preserve purity, detail and terroir expression.
Philosophy: a gentle, precise approach designed to express each climat faithfully rather than impose a dominant cellar signature.
Family legacy
Since its foundation by Armand Rousseau, the estate has remained in family hands. Charles Rousseau expanded its international reputation and helped establish the domaine as one of Burgundy’s great references. Today, Éric Rousseau and Cyrielle Rousseau continue the family work with the same discipline, discretion and respect for terroir.
Across four generations, Domaine Armand Rousseau has remained faithful to a Burgundian ideal: wines that do not seek excess, but rather depth, harmony and the truthful voice of place. This quiet confidence is precisely what makes Rousseau one of the most admired domaines in the world.
